How does your car drive with A/C on?

Kind of a strange question here but I only used the A/C couple of time since I own my 1M and every time I start the A/C it seem like to drain quite alot of energy on the engine. I know that A/C always use more energy but I didn`t know it was going to be that much. When I compare on and off I have to change gear at least twice as quick with A/C on to reduce the vibration and it never feel as smooth. From a dead stop you really have to give it alot more throttle to avoid stalling. Does your car drive the same?

Yes...it sucks. Last summer I refused to use the AC for this reason. I have used it a couple of times this year just because it has been so humid.

Although I rarely use the air conditioner, it is sufficiently loud to make conversation between passengers difficult (almost having to yell at one another).

Do others experience similar, or should it be quite like other BMWs?

Be happy, I bought a new gti in winter, when summer rolled around and I turned on the ac, the car refused to drive! I could seriously out run the car. It would lose about 50% of its torq.

yes the n54 and n55 suck with the ac on but not as bad as other cars. I also believe its more noticeable with manual trans cars.

I even turn my A/C on track - and still pulled 280kw from the logs.

Well the only time I use the A/C is when the wife is along, and those times I drive reasonably sedate..

I can sure feel a difference with it on vs. off. You definitely have to give the car a bit more throttle on take off. Also, the rpms drop quicker when the a/c is on, so it makes shifting seem jerkier if you are not shifting fast enough or adding more throttle than usual. Like someone else mentioned, it seems like a/c affects manual transmission cars more so than autos, although I'm not exactly sure why.

That said, I definitely prefer to drive with a/c off and windows down, but that's not always possible. Once you're on the highway and cruising in top gear, it's barely noticeable.

I pretty much leave my A/C on all the time and haven't noticed any difference. I hope this thread hasn't ruined it for me.

Definitely can feel the difference with AC on. The car idles higher and the rpm drops much quicker between shifts. I have always tried to avoid using AC but during the recent heat wave, it's impossible to drive with just windows down. The heat generated from the engine combined with the ambient temp makes it so unbearable especially if stuck in traffic. Yeah and the AC is very loud when it's on full blast.

Exactly, 24/7 A/C on even in winterconditions. No power loss whatsoever.

I also read somewhere @ WOT /pedal to metal in some BMWs in some circumstances the A/C is turned off automatically to give that extra power.

But as already stated. Our cars already are rather powerful so the difference on/off would hardly be felt anyway.

I once drove a 60BHP Suzuki Alto. The difference between A/C on-off is maybe 5/10HP but on such a coffeemaker engine you definitely feel it. Not on our 340+ BHP cars....at least it shouldn't.

Cheers
Robin

On a related note, do people find the AC very effective? I find mine takes a long time to cool the car down, much slower than with my S4. The air that comes out of the vents in the 1M seems cool, but not cold, while the S4's is much colder.

the rpm drop due to AC will be compensated by the ECU after a while, I find.

as well when you wot the AC detaches temporarily to give you max power

Yeah, the same for me! I keep it on all the time...in Lima with relative humidity close to 100% it's a must!!!
I don't feel it makes enough of a difference to justify turning it off, and I feel the same way towards the negligible difference in gas consumption.

I have noticed that the rpm's drop faster during shifts, so I have to time things a little differently, but the car does not feel sluggish.

Wow, guys are you racing your 1M everyday? for gods sake use the A/C the difference between on and off is almost unnoticeable. I wouldn't drive Ever in summer heat without A/C anymore. The low end torque of the 1M makes the big difference.

no doubt.. I occasionally forget to turn mine off during an autocross.
last event, ambient temps were 100 degrees... didnt notice any major difference other than the cool air coming from the vents which alerted me that it was still on after my run.

take a long time to cool down... in Canada? really? what's that from about 83 degrees?

note that there is a MAX setting... it makes a significant difference.

I have yet to use it really, and I am in Texas..

I find the AC's effectiveness to noise ratio is very bad. I find the fan/air movement is loud vs its cooling ability.

My car's quite heavily tuned with FBO and meth with catless DPs, straight mids and only a race (straight through) muffler at the rear. Since reading this thread I gave it a go and I do notice quite a difference. The car shifts smoother and also the tone of the exhaust is much smoother. Less rasp when accelerating.
