Will dealer deny Fuel Pump Replacement with Downpipes?

Questions pretty much in the title, but i think the fuel pump is going out and want to go to the dealer to get the replacement. I'm slightly worried that because i have a full exhaust, downpipes included, they might deny me. Has anyone had any experience with this? I honestly do not have the time, resources, or money to remove the downpipes so that is out of the question. Thanks for any responses.

Well you already gave us your options by saying "I honestly, do not have the time, resources, or money to remove the downpipes."

Then you have to go into the dealer and try your lucky and hope for the best. Or acquire the time/money/resources to remove them and be 100% safe. All dealers are different.

This has been a recalled item so the failure cannot be associated with your exhaust. I would say go there and get them to replace it. I can tell you right now a few people may try to say otherwise but you will be fine. If one dealer gives you hell then you are forced to take them off and go to another.

I was in the exact same situation last February. The 1st dealer I went to implied that the DP's had contributed to the failure of the HPFP. So, I went to another dealer and they replaced the HPFP and 5 of 6 injectors because they were items under a recall and could be replaced, even if they were not damaged and functioned properly.

So, don't take no for an answer; and you may have to go to more than 1 dealer.

A recall is a recall. They can not deny you coverage. It does not matter what you have done to your engine. IF BMW has agreed to recall some parts/iteims, then they HAVE TO replace them under the federal recall. Now... they CAN void your warranty IF there is anything remaining (time/miles). But that is another issue.

I agree with Dackelone. The hpfp is a recall that has noting to do with the warranty. The dealership should replace it with no questions asked.

Concerning the warranty, you should find a good SA and become friends with them. I know that my dealership in Charlotte has gone above and beyond their call of duty when I had my M3.

They repainted part of the rear lower quarter panel because the paint was bubbling from salt damage. They actually did it twice because the first time the company they hired did not do a good job.

I had my Vanos fail, which they fixed under warranty and during a valve adjustment job I found a cam sprocket that had a tooth chipped from the original failure. I had my car towed in and they replaced that cam sprocket as well even though I was out of warranty. They did it because the original failure was under warranty.

I did not buy that car or my 135 from them either.

I had a tune on my M3 as well as headers and after market wheels.

I really think that it depends on the dealership. I heard some horror stories on the m3 message board but I never had any problems.

They cannot just void your warranty. Flat out, plain and simple, it's against the law.

Everyone says this every time a thread is brought up about voiding a warranty. But truth is, good luck and have fun proving this. You will need to hire a lawyer to fight it out in court. The dealer can refuse to work on your car whenever they feel that BMWUSA will not compensate them for the service due to your mods. And if you start threatening them with it being illegal and the Magnuson Moss act then they will make a note in the computer saying your car is modified and then no dealer at all will touch it. You will have to go hire a lawyer and fight it out in court.

The best bet is to have a great relationship with a service adviser at your local dealer and hope for the best. Or go find reviews online of certain BMW dealers / service advisers that may be more mod friendly.

I'm too stubborn to just "let" them do that. I'd take them to court just to prove a point, but I could see where some people might not want to go that route. I do agree with you in the fact that you have to have a relationship with your dealership while finding a dealership that plays by the legal rules.

When I had my second HPFP replaced, the dealership gave me hell for my mods. Even though it was recalled, they have every right to deny work on your car. No, they will not void your warranty, but they can simply not work on your car until it is returned to stock.

I had to put my car back to stock, brought it back, got a new HPFP, and reinstalled all mods.

I even went and wrote a negative review on this said dealership and a particular representative and they came at me threatening me with legal action for slander . Nothing I could do about it. I'm not gonna waste the money for a lawyer so I removed a few select words and they stopped calling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuso...s_Warranty_Act

The burden of proof is on THEM to prove that the downpipes directly caused HPFP failure. if they cannot prove this (and they can't, because the exhaust has nothing to do with the fuel pump) then they must replace your parts under warranty. Bring up the magic words "Magnuson Moss" and they should do it. If they still refuse, bring up the other magic word.. "lawyer". They won't refuse; it's a case they will certainly lose.

As I said earlier, go ahead give it a try. Once you bring up the word lawyer, they will cease all communication with you and tell you to go talk to their lawyer.

They know you won't take them to court over a 1-2k bill when it will cost you 5k+ in lawyer fee's.

That's not what I was inferring. What I was saying is that the downpipes have nothing to do with the HPFP and it shouldn't matter in the first place because they are going to get replaced anyways wether he had the pipes on or not. Still defective. If I have a problem with my headlights, but they won't do work because I have a down pipe is what I am talking about. I'll gladly own up to a blown turbo with the down pipe on and a full tune. It's completely my fault and you've go to pay to play. They can only deny that specific claim not your entire warranty.

What does the fuel pump cost to replace, if you do get stuck with the bill? Anybody had to pay for this out of pocket yet?

Question is: What would you honestly do if they did?

Ever heard of pay to play?

My guess would be $400 for the HPFP and two hour COD labor. Most dealers charge upwards of $100/hr. S were are talking $600. Thats just a guess though. I rememver KC_Skyrider had to buy a HPFP over here while at the drag races over in Bittburg. I think he said the HPFP cost him 300 euros. He slapped it in himself.

Dackel

hpfp is about $220 in the states. Should be an easy DIY.
