BMW Assist termination

SA finally got back to me: apparently there is charge for the retrofit. They'll have to order the part first, and I'll just need to set up an appointment. Once installed, the annual subscription cost is $200 -- which is reasonable, in my opinion. I'll provide an update once I have the retrofit installed. Thx!

I was told no charge. But yes there is a $200 fee once your original factory warranty expires.

Factory-no, CPO-yes. According to the email my bmw assist subscription runs until 06/2018

My factory warranty is up in March, so they want me to pony up $200 to extend Assist past march in order to get the free retrofit.

I put my 2011 E88 135i VIN in and it gave me the three options. I don't have iDrive or Nav, so I wouldn't have know without this thread.

Now I have to analyze the options. I will look into the retrofit without re-upping the service.

I read the fine print of the offer and it does actually state if there is less than a year left on your warranty/subscription you will be expected to pay $200 to do the retrofit and continue service.

Yeah, probably, unless you have an active subscription to BMW Assist. Plug your VIN into the website tool and see . . .

It just errors out, guessing that mean no luck.

You might be able to pay for the retrofit plus services renewal, but then you're probably better off with just going the AAA route.

The only reason I'm doing the retrofit is to keep the app functionality. I use the 'send this address to your car' function a lot.

I do the same thing with the 135 and the Toyota Avalon. It s a nice feature. The workflow is much simpler on the BMW too which makes it extra nice.

I received a message on my non iDrive car this morning. Kind of made my head hurt for a few minutes, that was the first time that ever happened. It stated that my BMW Assist technology will be unsupported as of 01.01.2017.

Whoa - that is not easy to spot! so does the message just scrolls like a billboard ad on the screen?

Sort of, once you navigate the menus and find the message section, you use the right hand knob to scroll the message up or down on the screen. Needless to say I don't see a lot of value in retrofitting and re-upping the subscription after my free subscription is up. I'll take the $200.

One thing that was nice about my '08 Acura TL was that the communication between the car and the mother-ship was via the data plan on my smart phone. The car connected to the phone via Bluetooth and so long as my phone was in the car it would download and send whatever it needed then.

That's pretty nice. I haven't checked into what my wife's 2013 RDX with the tech package is capable of. I get the impression any of these bells and whistles we're talking about were an additional cost even with the car being bought new. I laugh at all the GM ads bragging about having an LTE wireless hotspot in their cars. Big deal. Just get a MiFi and not have to worry about equipment obsolescence due to technological evolution.
