DIY: 1M mirrors swap

1M mirrors are plug-and-play swap compatible with all previous E82/88/87 models for that sporty look.
Make sure you have the correct RHD or LHD set!!
Tools needed - hex screw driver
Time required - 15 mins each
Pitfalls to avoid - do not drop the screws behind the door trim!

Sorry for the hazy pics folks!

Pic 1 - the triangular sail cover, in some cars may house a tweeter, is removed by pulling on it backwards along the window, from left to right as it is on the pic.
here is a video demonstrating how to remove and instal the covers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=lUYtEk93XSU

Pic 2 - this exposes 2 of the screws holding the mirror on to the door frame and the power and controls plug

Pic 3 - location of the 3rd screw. unplug the connection by gently pulling on it and wiggling side to side. Undo the screws and gently remove the mirror by lifting the bottom edge and then pulling the mirror down from underneath the rubber seal.

Installation in reverse - ensure the mirror base plate goes under the rubber seal on top of the door, and that the rubber electrical socket lining is in good position in the opening of the door frame. Secure with screws, plug the connection back in and test it - you may need to start the car for the test or press the power button x2. Replace the triangular sail by wedging the bottom side of the triangle in the door trim and then sliding the top part of the sail along the window until the clips have locked it in place.

Pic 4 and 5 - before and after shot

between $600-$900 for a pair depending on options like auto-dim and fold-in, individual-car.com or tischer bmw have retrofit kits available at discount to bmw prices. Your best bet is to get second hand - a few floating around from racing conversions, write offs etc

You really don't need to - I even have speakers in my A Sails and still didn't need to remove the door card.

not yet... these are from the wrong pair... they bolt on OK but because of different mirror angles are completely useless

That's not as simple as just changing out the mirrors though...

You're looking at about $900 for folding mirrors plus whatever else needs to be added to the car. I don't have folding mirrors so I'm just guessing but I'd assume that you need a switch - which may include replacing a whole bank of switches (if it's in a location like the drivers door panel) - Plus wiring and coding etc.

I had folding mirrors on my last car and I think i used them twice in 3 years?

Basically, if you are going to park somewhere that you need to fold the mirrors then you're likely to ding the doors getting in and out - so don't.

So i got the mirrors. They fit great, look awesome, but because my car has auto-folding and auto-dip mirrors, the electric adjustments dont work and when i plug them in, they both just adjust all the way down. Is there a re-zeroing option? My mirrors actually only have 3 prongs in the connection while the 1M mirrors have 5, but 5 of the wires are connected to the OEM connector for my 3 pin mirrors. It also stops function of the window controls when they are plugged in. At this point, ill leave them unplugged and move them manually and hope to be able to make the correct pin adjustments so that i can have at least my electronic mirror adjustments back shortly.

Does anyone have a solution to this? I may have to just crack open the housings and see where the wires go and see if i can manually trace which pins send a signal to where when.

Pictures for reference:

Just because they look great!

I'd assume that the other 2 pins are for the power-folding function?

You CAN remove the electronics from your old mirrors and install them in the new ones.
  • There's a disc on the back of the mirror housing - you can see it with the mirror cap off. Un-clip that - carefully.
  • There's a cut-out segment on the underside of the mirror - that slides out.
  • With the mirror not mounted to the car, carefully wedge a trim removal tool or such under that 5 pin connector and work it loose.
  • There is then a clip on the plug that releases it from the housing.
  • Disconnect the wires going to the heating element on the back of the Glass.
The wiring loom is now free so just pull it out. Do this for both mirrors and then install your old wiring loom in the ///M Mirrors.

PS: Take the Mirror caps off the mirrors while they are still on the car. MUCH easier to do then when they are off.

Question: If your car only has 3 pins in the connector, are you sure it has Auto-Folding?

(It's your car so I assume you know but I though that's what those extra 2 pins are for.)

That's the thing. The stock mirrors have a 3 pin connection on the mirror but use a 6pin wired connector with 5 pins in it. The stock mirrors have auto dim/dip/fold and heater with only 3 pin connections.

I was considering trying to convert the 1M mirrors to power fold with the stock motors but I don't want to canibalize the stock mirrors just yet.

I think the connector is always the same 6 pin one. (mine is and it doesn't have power fold)

Mine only has 3 pins in the connector though.

I'd think that if you swap the electronics out of your original mirrors then it will be fine.

My guess would be that your car is expecting power fold mirrors and they're not there so it's not working properly?

They look great! Glad they arrived safe mate and sorry about the plug disparity! Perhaps there's a way to figure out which pin does what - 2 are power, no doubt, 3rd is control pin - and modify the plug accordingly?

Whats strange to me is that the connections that aren't used on the stock mirrors are green (traditionally ground) and brown (traditionally line power or +). The 3 connections used are the blue with various stripes which i am assuming is for the stepper motors for the different functions.

Ill try to take a look at my stock mirror electronics vs the 1M and try to see if it fits. Ill probably also look up the tech drawings to see if theres a part number difference.

So it looks like the electronics themselves can be swapped.
According to part# 5 here:

PN 67137191398 Is for ALL configurations of the mirror and functions. With/Without auto-dip and heating.

For the 1M Mirrors,

67137191398 is the same PN for auto dip, but doesnt say anything about power folding.
67137191402 is what seems to probably be in the mirrors right now.

Doesnt look too awful to do. I might crack open the stock mirrors this weekend. Ill keep everyone updated!
