Wheel offset
So, as long as the wheels are 5 x 120, what does the offset have to be between? 40 and 57? Can I use other series BMW wheels? This is for winter wheels and tires for a 135I. There are posts on tire widths but nothing that you can follow on wheels.

Width of the wheel in question matters, as well as diameter, hub size and spoke design since some winter wheels won't clear the front brembos. You sound lost, maybe stick to tirerack and see what wheels they offer for the 135i... use those specs to cross-shop.

7-8" widths, ET40-51 should be okay.

wheels
What he said. As an example I run bmw oem style 103, 17x8 et47 and they are perfect for winter use. They were on the Z4.

Some 3 series wheels will fit but again it depends on size, width and off set. I put some 3 series wheels on my car but they were virtually the same size 17X8 and 47ET. They work fine. I tried some 19 inch with a 35ET and they did not fit.

There are hundreds of oem BMW rims so it is impossible to give you all that will work. Here is a useful guide to the oem rims. If you play around you will figure out how to use it. Or just click on the picture of the rim and it will give you the specs and you can determine if they work for you. http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/

You basically want e46 or z4 (2003-2008) non-m wheels where the offsets were high 40's. Running 4 fronts (non-staggered) is what you should go for with a 215 width (assuming 8" width).
