High Mileage E85

Howdy All

Been on a break- Boat bug

I have a 2011 DCT N55- Its my daily driver and averages 800ks p/w
it has just turned over 170,000 klms.
I have had a JB4 running Map 2 for 140,000 of those K's
I have had a boost issue for a couple of months now, but Burger just replaced the board FOC ( good people)
When I replaced the board I also installed flex wires.
I put in 20 lts of E85 and am using map 5. Car feels fantastic.

Question is should I be doing this on such a high mileage car ?

Wow thats a lot of kays!

I recall advan had a tuned car with 211k kays on it!!

At the end of the day a well maintained car should still be running strong

20 litres is far to much on map 5 as your tanks only holds around 55 litres.

Its a far too strong a concentration for map 5 with a stock fuel system.

Do you know how to log the jb4, not trying to scare you but keep and eye out on your hpfp, lpfp, trims and knock tables.

Log, log and log but from my experience at most you should be running is 7 litres in your tank mixed with 98 and that's after logging.

Jeez that might explain the huge rattle and the puddle of oil under the car !

Nah the oil is most probably valve cover leaking or oil filter housing, but the rattle could be the higher concentration ethanol, suggest you drive it tamely and keep adding 98 to it to dilute the ethanol

The stock fuel system can't handle this fuel anything over a 10 to 20% mix at best before something begins to struggle.

Just joking, about the puddle and rattle.Car feels / sounds good

Logging tomorrow.

Is the N55 pump better than the N54 ?

Also I want to know how you did a 1.3 60" ft time but only ET'd at 115 mph (hoosiers @ 15 psi -?)

From N54 tech

1) Generally speaking you can run 30-40% E85 without the need for logging or worrying about fuel trims, fuel pressure, etc. Just mix E85 in and select map 5. Done.
2) For those wanting to run higher mixtures (and more power) then you need to datalog. You'll want to first look at your low fuel pressure in the JB4 logs. If that is dropping below 50 then you're maxing out the low fuel pressure and should either reduce the E85 mixture or add fuel pump upgrade.
3) Next up look at fuel trims. If they are exceeding 50 in the JB4 logs & open loop is already at 90-100, or if you get 29F2 codes from having too high of an open loop, then you need to add the BMS back end flash for E85 fuels to extend the fueling range. The E85 flash also features VANOS changes, higher than factory timing advance, and some other stuff designed to help make more power on E85.
4) Finally after the flash and low pressure pump, you need to keep an eye on the high pressure pump. If it drops below 9 @ wide open throttle then you're maxing out the high pressure pump and need to lower the E85 mixture or lower the boost in the areas where it's dropping below 10. Right now there is no viable high pressure pump update. The only known solution that works is to add meth at this point. This is why BMS suggests 60-70% E85 and not 100% E85. The 100% E85 works the fuel system harder with no power benefit over say 70%.
5) Most cars will need an inline fuel pump upgrade OR meth to run more than 50% E85. We suggest this inexpensive inline option.
6) Using map 7 requires 50-60% E85, the back end flash, AND the fuel pump upgrade.

just order one of these to be safe

The n55 has better hpfp so keep an eye out on your lpfp.

I for a fact had maxed fuel trims and fuel pressure problems until I upgraded to a new HPFP and LPFP stage 2 and that's running e20

With the new pumps I was on the limit with e43 which is 50/50 98 and e85.

Now with the pi kit I run straight e85 with plenty up my sleeve and the fuel pressures are perfect and trims are at neutral, I'm very happy with this setup.

The n54 post is just a guide line, you should always log from experience.

The 1.3 60 foot was when the track was fully prepped perfect conditions and a lucky fluke, as soon as I launched I knew, it was a fast run, it just felt right.

Some guys on here think its a timing error but my car consistently runs 1.8's and lower.

Post a log. Without a log, anything else is purely speculation.

I could run E40 with just the jb4 (no flash) and no fueling upgrades.

I'm now 100% E85 with TB injection whilst still on the factory LPFP. 120k kms and still going strong.

Every car is different, as is clearly evident based on the other replies in this thread.

Nb. Im N54, not N55

Garage List
2011 BMW 135i  [10.00]
N55 with stock turbo and stock fuel pump should be fine up to e50.
I'd log and check first couple of times though.

Thanks for that info.

Re- the 1.3 60 footer, .5 of a second is a long time.
Best way to appease the naysayers is to do another 1.3 time, actually anything below a 1.5 should be near enough
