Just for reference, with an otherwise stock suspension, I was able to dial in -2.4* at full tilt with the Vorshlag's. Pulled it back a bit for a conservative starting point. If tire wear dictates, I'll set it up for more camber. The Hankook's clearly demonstrate the need for a lot of negative camber to operate effectively.

That's perfect!!! That is what im shooting for next, how do you like the 245 bfg rivals? I love my 225 square but I need to step it up to 245 now haha! These tires are by far one of the best street tires I had in ages!

Hey everyone, I'm looking to pick up 17" track tires and wheels. Since 245/40/17 wouldn't work well up front (stock 135i m sport), I'm looking at 225/45/17f and 245/40/17r. Would this be ok? As for the wheels, 17x8f and 17x8.5r? And what offset would be decent for visuals and leave enough room for track duty? I saw on the other wheel thread +45 rears, not sure about the fronts.

A few options for 17" wheels. For 225 / 245 staggered combo.
Apex ARC-8: 17x8.5 ET40 / 17x9.0 ET42 * Team dynamics pro race 1.2: 17x8.0 ET40, 17x9.0 ET45. Forgestar F14: 17x8.5, 17x9.0 in custom offsets. I suggest getting tires such as Advan AD08R: 235/40/17 F, 245/40/17 R. The rears will fit on 17x9.0 ET45 if you have -2.0 camber and not excessively dropped. * If you have ET42 rear rims you may need to roll the fenders. Last edited by John_01; 03-16-2015 at 11:47 PM.. hi John, thx for the PM, I was just replying until I realized you replied here.
I'd like to go with the 225/245 combo for 17" (was looking at a cost-efficient set-up for my level of track driving, and staggered seems to be the only way to go on completely 100% stock suspension, 18" included). I noticed you provided different offsets above, even at the same width (eg. 17x9 team dynamics ET45, but Apex ET42), why is this? and from what I've read online, nobody seems to have issues with 17" clearing the OEM 6 piston brembos. I'm looking at going with 17x8 and 17x8.5. So from above, I can go with ET40 fronts. how about rears? I've also found someone doing 17x8+40 245/40/17 Square, but not for track. Would this setup work? I'm not looking to do ANY mods to the car as I'd like to see how it tracks with 100% stock suspension (2011 135i Msport). I have runflats, which I do not want to track with, so I'll be getting tires/wheels, and replacing pads/fluids before my first outing this season. I'll be looking at getting RS3s or equivalent. (I don't want to go really wide on rears just yet, perhaps in the future as I improve on my driving. I had 275 RS3 rears on my 350z and I think it was overkill for me haha never broke the rears loose on the track, so clearly I'm not driving at that level yet. And Yes, I understand that the 350z has less torque than the 135i). Last edited by l2iceman; 03-17-2015 at 09:55 AM.. |

Ideally we would like to have rear offset of ET45 or more, but the wheels aren't commonly available. ET40 rear offset may be a limitation, since a Hankook RS-3 245/40/17 may be a very tight fit if your rear fenders are stock. At least you will need -2.0 degree rear camber as a starting point (set to maximum negative). Then assuming stock ride height it would probably not rub. Quote:

The rear 245/40/17 is more likely to rub. The RS-3 225/45/17 on the front may fit ok, so you could try it first and see if the camber plates are needed or not from a fitment point of view. They way I see it, there isn't much point running completely stock camber if you intend to drive on a track. It will just damage the shoulder of the tire and not provide much grip.

Thanks John_01. It's odd that the 245/40/17 would be likely to rub when the oem rear size is 245-width as well - and the overall diameter is about 90mm shorter than OEM.
If I'm going to get camber plates up front, I may as well just get a set of BC coilovers, which come with camber adjustability up front. I'll be keeping stock height as I don't want to go lower due to the driveway in my condo. |
