M3 subframe swap or ...? please advice
Hello everyone , I have a big dilemma and please can you advice me.
I have bmw 135i 2008 6MT and i want to upgrade my suspensions. I don't track my car but i really dont like how stock 135i is driving. As you all know too much body roll, understeer, rear end wiggle and rear end disconected feel. So i already bought bmw m3 rear subframe bushings but not install them yet, and i bought bmw 3.08 differential which have bolted ring gear inside because its more easier and cheaper to install lsd. - already spent 600€... So my plan was: -m3 subframe bushings -ST XTA coilovers which have front spring rate 75N/mm, rear-103N/mm + camber plates -cluth type lsd(probably new v2 clutch type from mfactory) + black polyurethane diff bushings -polyurethane rear upper shock mounts -and probably all m3 bits in the future. total cost: 2800€ without labor and now i found this...one local guy wracked his e92 m3 2013 DKG 3.15 diff, 30000km and he can sold me complete rear axle for 1500€ and front axle for 1500€ At the moment i have money only for the rear axle , but he can probably keep front axle for me while i collect all money. So i have few questions that i dont understand good. total cost: 3000€ without labor and i will probably be able to sell some parts(new m3 bushings, 135 bolted differential, and my 135 front and rear axle. I know i need to make a custom drive shaft. 1. Can i use m3 rear brakes with 135i brake master cylinder?? and 135i brakes on the front? 2. If seller sold the front axle while I am collecting money for front axle, what options do I have for front suspension to match the rear end?? I supposed that i will need to buy m3 brakes and knuckles and then I will be able to install m3 shocks and springs? 3. If i dont buy m3 front axle , whether it would be possible to use for front maybe koni yellow/bilstein + some stiffer springs to match the rear end? What would you do in my place? I am wonder how much better is this m3( front and rear combination) vs my first suspension plan? I'm really sorry for my bad English and a long post. |

Jesus if I could get a full m3 rear end in good shape for only $1500 I'd do it in a heartbeat. Is his propshaft in good shape too? Gonna have to get it cut and balanced. Alternatively should be able to buy a 1M prop.
Look up Froop here on the forums.

My two cents for zero cents.
You can install an m3 subframe and make it work. Get the driveshaft cut and balanced...possible but seems like a solution that is asking for more issues. Even without issues you might find, after install, that you want more than a basic M subframe setup so the $s keep flowing. My approach would be to address the issues which are a concern. I have done something similar to what you are attempting to achieve with little or no chance of issues. I have bilstein sports with power flex bushing on the shocks and diff. I have bmwp springs. M3 sfb. The diff is a quaife. Eibach sway bars. I've driven a 1m and m3 and my car is tighter in the suspension than either. I'm not saying the car is an M. I'm simply stating that the suspension is tighter with less roll than either one. I have no desire to do more. If I had the M subframe I am 100% confident I would want to tweak it more and tweaks aren't cheap. Obviously, this is a more conservative approach. Your call.

This is my calculation.. aftermarket lsd 1000+€ , decent coilovers 1100€ without bushungs and m3 bits already 2100€...i paid for m3 axles 2500€+ 300€ labor.. i just sold my brembo calipers+rotors for 500€ and bolted 335i diff for 350$+have potential buyer for my rear axle for 600€.. i will sold 1400€ of my parts + have front axle parts which i potentaly can sold in the future. And i easly gain back near 2000€.
I got m3 steering rack,1m brakes,m-diff...all for about max 1000€ ) |

My frist plan was m3 subframe bushings, poly diff bushings,st xta coils, clutch type lsd..I guess that this setup would be probably better then stock original 1M , but this setup is a lot more expensive in my situation.
+ i will do 1M body conversion next year and i will probably keep this car for a life.. |

Sounds like you've made up your mind. Go for it.

You can put the M3 rear subframe in, but you need to get a shorted drive shaft. That will cost some money to get it balanced properly.
If you keep the 135i rear brakes you will need adjustable rear toe links to get the correct wheel alignment, as the 135i hub carries are slightly different to the M3 ones. See the details of another installation here. I don't know about using the M3 rear brakes. I guess it may be ok if the piston size is similar. |

I know i will need custom drive shaft, my best friend is a turner he will cut, weld and balans custom drive shaft free for me.
I will use front and rear m3 brakes, from another forum i saw that someone already use m3 brakes with 135i brake master cylinde without problems. |
