Stuttering

So when i try to accelerate in 5 or 6th gear the car has some stuttering as it accelerates. In my old car this was a sign of the coil packs going bad. Could that be the same thing on the 135i?

The car has no mods other than BMS DCI.

Usually three things with these engines Plugs, Coil packs, then injectors usually in that order. There really is no way of knowing until you pull codes. Could also be carbon build up or HPFP.

Check your plugs install, also I have heard from these forums that these cars are finicky with plugs and prefer dealer sold plugs over otherwise similar OEM plugs.

Do you have access to an OBD2 scanner? There are some auto shops that read codes for free. Even if your car doesn't have a CEL light on there is a chance for a fault code.

Give us some more background on the car, mods? previous issues?

I could guess a million things, but my personal experience and reading these forums makes me think: plugs, coil-packs, etc then mod-related or possibly a bad clutch if you have a 6MT. There's a chance for bad gas which I have seen posted here, but never properly diagnosed. There is also wastegate issues on turbos but since it is gear specific that makes me doubt that.

Best of luck,
Venom

Yeah it isn't throwing a CEL. No mods except DCI. It is a manual, but i think the clutch is fine. I am really hoping it isn't the turbos but more the coilpacks. I also wonder about the DV?

I really need to get it scanned. I have a buddy who is a mechanic so I will see if he has the right tool

You should hope its the turbos...those are covered to 82K miles.

Your wastegates might have failed. Get them checked out at your dealer.

stuttering is a symptom of failed wastegates? Am I not supposed to hear something too??

If the wastegates arent holding boost - or holding boost irregularly youll notice lag and stuttering.

The rattle is very hard to pick up. The only surefire way to hear it is drive down a street lined by parked cars, downshift and let the car slow down on engine vacuum.

When you do that youll be able to pick up on a ratcheting noise coming from under the car.

Also just take it to the dealer. Say the car is having acceleration issues can you check the turbos. Theres a warranty extension/possible recall out on the turbo wastegates and theyll do the functional testing on the parts for free. Nothing to lose.

+1.

When the engine missfires it shutters. It will feel like your driving on square tires instead of round ones!

IF your spark plugs have more than 45K miles, its time to change them. Most change then at ~25K with a tune.

The first thing you really need to do is read the DME fault memory. Then go from there.

I'm going to solve your issue right now... it's carbon buildup. I had the EXACT same thing and the carbon cleaning solved it immediately. Despite me literally telling the dealer that it was carbon, they went through everything else that has been mentioned in this thread before finally breaking down and doing a carbon cleaning. I was ripping pissed because they kept my car for over a week to diagnose an issue that I told them about at the start.

Did they cover it at no cost to you?

I have 56,000 miles on the car. It is a 2008 so it is unfortunately our of warranty but i do have an extended warranty and need to see what that covers.

I doubt carbon cleaning is covered though.
