09 135i won't start after 5 years issue free...

So my 09 135i with 116500 miles won't start anymore... The last time I drove the car was on Tuesday, it the. Sat in my driveway I went to start it Thursday morning and I get this:

.

The car won't start at all and anytime press the start button the electronics go crazy as you can see in the video.

Car has a new Bosch Battery I installed 2 weeks ago and was running fine this whole time. Battery still shows a good charge so it is not a bad battery... Anybody have this happen before to their 1er? The only other thing I did differently was get a wifi obd2 connector to use with the BMWhat app to clear some codes (airbag related due to head unit install) and I was also using it with Dash Comand on my Pioneer app radio to read engine telemetry. I left the wifi connector plugged into the obd port from tues-thurs but I can't see that causing anything like this... Any thoughts?

Have you tried both keys? Have you checked the battery terminals to make sure that the connections are good?

Best of luck to you!

Since you had the wifi connector on the car, I would take that out disconnect the battery for a few minutes and then reconnect the battery and give it another try.

Has the battery cable recall been done? Not exactly the symptoms of a melted cable but it's possible.

Take a multimeter to check if there is power going to the front terminals. If not it could be the battery cable which should be covered under recall.

New battery needs to be coded to the car. Did you do that? It is not a simple drop in like other makes.

Did not read the replys, but, your wifi adapter was drawing power the entire time. That is your problem. Also, did you have the battery coded?

It takes very little parasitic draw to kill a battery in a couple days.

Not really. The only issue with the battery coding is that the battery would be OVERcharged while driving due to the ECM thinking the battery is old and not new. There is no specific language that the ECM needs to know about the battery, only that there has been a new battery installed, and these symptoms do not sound like that.

As for the draw coming from the wifi adapter, I don't think that is likely. Although I think that it is something to do with the battery, if you've charged it sufficiently, and it is still experiencing these symptoms, consider taking the battery back to wherever you got it from and have them test it. Just because it's new doesn't mean that it may not be defective. Alternatively, you could disconnect the battery and attempt to let the car sit powerless for a time, and then re-connect. (Don't be the guy who locks yourself out of the car though.)

My advice is to throw the battery on a charger, and try to start the car while having someone monitor what the battery charger says during your attempt to start. If all power is drawn from the battery during the start attempt, then let the battery charge for some time, then try again.

So I have tried removing the battery recharging it fully over night and it still will not start the car. After the battery recharge I don't get the flickering lights and fast ticking when hitting the start button anymore. I just get 1 loud click which sounds like the starter trying to engage but it won't even begin to turn over... It is very strange, everything else on the car seems to be working normally, I can lock and unlock the doors use the windows the radio works everything! Except start the car...

Your battery is dead. What's the battery's static voltage? I bet less than 12v - since you left your OBDII connector plugged in.

Try a new battery or charge yours up. G.L.

I would also have your car checked for any recalls - like the battery cable recall.

I guess I'm in the link posting mode today. This is the tester I use to diagnose possible battery problems:

http://www.harborfreight.com/100-amp...9888-9193.html

Price is just over $20. It lets you put a 100 amp draw on the battery - briefly - and read the voltage. But the voltage readout is in cold cranking amps. It also lets you test the battery charge and tells you if the alternator is working. I only use it once every few years but it is handy to have.

I agree with the dead battery conclusion, however. I don't know if your OBD II device did it but I don't think so. I've had mine on my daughters car for months with no impact. Sometimes new batteries fail. That is one reason there is a free replacement period.

The possibility that a new battery would be a problem is one reason I like to test the old one first. Some batteries last a surprisingly long (or short) time.

It's been a while so I supposed you're running again. What was the problem?

Would like to know as well. My car wouldn't even turn over. Just 1 loud click. But my lights wouldn't go crazy like that. For that reason I feel that the battery was probably not the best for the car...

Exactly.

The service manager at our dealerships group BMW dealer told me they have seen several batteries that have exploded from not being coded.

I'm not disputing the need for coding a new battery, but if true it's a shockingly poor design decision from bmw. If I'm in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery, bmw has given me no way to replace it without fear of it blowing up?
