Power Problems (as in too much!)

I have a 2009 135i with the Dinan Stage 2.

I can't get power to the ground...lots of spinning...other than new tires, what should be looking at to remedy this?

Bigger wheels/tires and a LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL.

Was looking at Dinan's LSD...manual only...car's an auto ;(

Any suspension thoughts other than LSD and wider/better tires? I'm still on the RFTs and will replace them once they are worn out...

I'm not sure the differences between auto and manual transfer cases. I can't imagine them being any different. There are other options such as Quaife and OS Giken.
Be sure to check your tire pressures. Obviously BMW kind of does this for you already but a few psi can make a big difference and I'm not sure the tolerances for the TPMS.
If you are having problems getting power down starting off, I believe there is a trick for the auto's to start in 2nd that should yield faster 0-60, 0-100 and 1/4 mile times due to the fact that you aren't wasting time shifting from 1st to 2nd.
Hope some of this helps!

Thx Swaite....I agree, the 1st gear is quite useless 4500 RPMs before you're out of the intersection and spinning all the way! Not useful!

I usually start in 2nd, but if I push hard, the back end is breaking loose the whole time. I know some of it has to do with the temperature...it's only +14C (~60-65F) right now...cold tires don't stick well.

I'm hoping to fix it to get even better traction in the summer though! I still break loose in the summer...

If your car is an Auto you're in luck. Either Quaife or Wavetrack + install will be around 2000 out the door.

LSD does far more for you then help you off the line. In fact, compared to an LSD I've found most every other suspension mod to be inferior.

Contact Harold at HP Autowerks for more info.

Apply the power more progressively. You don't NEED an LSD, even though it would be nice, you can put down the power down fine if you put your foot to the floor gradually and gently while sensing if the car is losing grip.

It is the RFT,,,just there nature being so hard and stiff. Any bump, imperfection in the road will cause the car to loose grip with RFT going full tilt..As mentioned you have to use the throttle carefully with these tires and pick your spots accordingly to go fast...they are un-forgiving with bad roads

I have the Dinan Stage 2 software. Toyed around with tires for months until I just did what I should have done and went 255/275 with PSS tires. No longer is 1st gear useless. It's much harder to lose traction.

Either way you go: LSD or wheels/tires you're looking at 2k+, but it's the only way to get the power on the ground, by splitting it or just being more capable.

Check out LSD at hpautowerks.com Harold has a few options for the Auto.

Yeah ditch the RFTs. I did and picked up A/S Pilot Sport Plus. Even though they are A/S tires, they grip way better than the RFTs. I'm happy with my purchase.

Can't imagine the grip with a Summer Max performance tire.

YES to the LSD (check Harold (harold@hpautowerks.com) who will get you sorted, and quickly) and grippy non-RFTS will help as well!

Well, be easy with your right foot is free, everything else will cost money. If you are getting wheels and tires anyway, better tires are the way to go. There is no substitute for more traction through a good LSD, it will put power smoothly to both wheels for a more stable launch, not to mention the car will be more sure footed around the turns as well.

one thing most people do is slam the peddle down, they just want an instant hit of power, and this is fun, but if you learn to be really smooth with the peddle you will be able to maximize the traction in each gear

with the run flats, you will leave some nice black lines behind you in first and second gear, but you'll still pull like a monster if you learn how to be smooth on the peddle.

after that though, since you're looking for the lesser given answers, stiffer bushings will keep the chassis from squirreling around on you a bit better.

but with all honesty, when i first added power and punched the gas, i could feel the cars tail end wagging a bit, and that's down to the e-diff transferring power around, so my first recommendation would be LSD because it's going to give you the most for your money over the long run. but the tires are usefull for get up and go as well as turning and stopping. And to be honest, doing the suspension will help as it will help keep the front end from lifting as much and different things like that.

it's all one big system, it just depends on what your wallet wants to do.

+1. I dont have an LSD but put the power down just fine. It all depends how you use your right foot

Dinan's LSD isn't for the auto because the gear ratios are different. The auto has a higher gear ratio due to the taller over drive. I have the Dinan LSD in mine (manual) and it's worth the investment. I got a good deal from Dinan on it by just talking with the sales guy. I already had PS2s, which helped out a lot. Hell, even non rft snow tires are better than the factory sport rft tires. After tires and LSD, get into the M3 suspension bits to keep things in line better....noticeable differences there as well!

I'm ordering some FSDs and Eibach Pros this week, looking at an e93 sway as well.

I'll do new tires as soon as these run out. How wide can I go after dropping the car by 1.2"?

235/255?
245/265?

Rear width is most important to me but don't want insane understeer either.

I'll look at subframe bushings soon along with the M3 goodies that make sense. I won't LSD yet as I'm still under warranty for 3 years.

Thoughts?
