CP5555 will not fit with factory wheels as suspected. The wheels tapers off towards the centre which makes it a difficult fit for larger calipers like the Brembo GT and AP Racing kit.

FazerBoy, I have BBS RS-GT wheels. Not the ideal offset if you want to fit fat tyres at the back. I am going to get a set of custom wheels for that down the track.

Edit: I was wrong. It's not the caliper that doesn't fit, it's the 365mm rotors! The wheels taper in towards the spokes, so the diameter where the rotor sits is too small. But it clears with the BBS.

Do you think the APs will fit behind your BBS wheels? If so I might look at these - can you give me the sizes and offsets front and rear please?

I think we're in a race to be the first with AP's  I should have mine on within six weeks.

Jack, see this thread for all your need to know about my wheels. Btw, I confirmed yesterday that my 225 semi-slicks is WIDER than the OE 245.

Can you send me Bird's email address? I have a way of helping them keep the cost of the AP Kits down. We are manufacturing a couple of the hats for the brakes here for the 135i, which he also will have to do for yours and others he intends to sell. We may be able to do it cheaper for him given the exhange rates and also the scale.

As far as I know he is measuring it all up and he thinks the standard AP BBK for the 335i will go straight on. If that is the case why bother to make up special parts. If we do need a custom part then I think AP will make it up. The idea is that AP will have a full 135i kit - calipers, discs, pads, hoses and all fittings - I doubt he will want to mix AP parts and custom parts from an unknown source.

However, why not e-mail Kevin Bird and tell him we've been chatting (my name is Jack Leverton) and that you have a proposition for him.

His website is: http://www.birdsauto.com/

Let me know what happens.

Cheers

jack are you assuming that AP would eventually plan a customized 135i set based on the CP5575 or do you know this to actually be true?

This is definitely true - my car is the donor car for this in the UK.

Oh I see. So Bird is working with AP Racing to come up with a plug and play kit? Why 5575 then instead of 5555?

I'm not quite clear on this insistence of yours regarding the 5555?

I presume they are using the 5575 and 355mm discs because they will fit behind an 18" wheel (albeit not the standard one). I presume that with larger discs you will need a 19" wheel which means larger and more expensive tyres, more mass to accelerate, possible adverse effect on handling and with a small car like the 135i perhaps 19" wheels are a little out of proportion.

But what do I know? I'm leaving it to AP and Birds to sort out - I imagine they know what they're doing.

355 is enormous for 18" already. Remember you need some space for the air to get through, giving some cooling. 135i ain't design like F1 to have the perfect airflow

All very good points Jack. I guess for me it's because this is a track car so the bigger the stopping power the better so I couldn't understand why you wouldn't go the biggest possible rotor. And it fits my 18 inch BBS too so why not? But as a generic BBK by AP, I'm sure 355mm will be plenty as you said and most people will not want to go so large.

Taka, the thing to bear in mind also is that the bigger the stopping power, the less time you will be on the brakes so it will actually run cooler too. I will see how we go, but may need brake ducts down the track. But I doubt it given the nature of track time we do, which is limited to small number of laps at any time.

Way,

If it's possible for me to retain the standard wheels I'd really like to do that due mainly to cost and in fact I do like the looks.

Reading one of your posts above I can see that you appear to be able to measure up whether the calipers will fit various wheel sizes etc. Do you have any way of knowing whether in fact the standard wheels will fit with the 355mm rotors? In fact, because the 135i is quite a light car, what about if I got 330mm rotors? Do you think they would fit then? I'm sure 330mm would be more than enough on the street and for my occasional track days.

Cheers

There are minimum disc size on some model of AP Racing caliper... search the model on the ap racing site and see.

Yes, I did that. AP specify a kit for the 330i with 6-piston calipers and 330mm discs, for example. I am just wondering if this might be a way of retaining the stock wheels.

Jack, can I start by asking why you want to change your brakes in the first place? If your answer is more powerful braking, then going to a smaller rotor sort of defeats the purpose. But if you say it's because you have no confidence in the Brembos to hold up on track then I can understand. Why not just get some aftermarket wheels? I am about to order a set of Work Bombarcher custom made to fit our cars in 18's. Let me know by PM if you are interested.

My reasons for the change are both of those that you mention! I suppose I have by now resigned myself to getting aftermarket wheels.

I am aiming for:

Front - 18 x 8 ET42
Rear - 18 x 9 ET45

I believe these will clear the brakes with 355mm discs.

Cheers

I'll have the brakes on in a month's time. I'm going with Team Dynamics 18 x 8 wheels all round. They have plenty of brake clearance.

Fazerboy, my brakes are ready. I just haven't had the time to go in to get it installed. Will do that next week.

Fantastic! You will be the first then as mine are not ready yet.

Please let us have pics and other info when you've done them.

Thanks

No news yet as I only dropped the car off 24 hours ago and told them I don't need the car for awhile as I am very busy. They may or may not be working on the car as we speak but I suspect they will still get me to pick up the car by the end of the week so it doesn't take up their space!
