Question Question: Winter Wheels

How did you guys take the winter wheels to the dealer to get them mounted?

I cant seem to fit them in the trunk and I am not sure if I want to put them in the car with new leather interior.

Put them in plastic bags and fit 2 in the trunk and 2 on the back seat.

You might want to look elsewhere to get them mounted otherwise the dealer may be a bit more expensive. I don't know for sure but it's a thought?

To get the wheels mounted on your car? Buy a jack and do it yourself.

To get the tires mounted on your wheels, go to your local tireshop and save yourself $100.

Tirerack sent me the wheels with tires mounted so I dont need to do that. I did look into doing it myself and gone through this page for instructions http://www.tirerack.com/installer/package_install.jsp but kinda doubtful. Searching though the forum, I get hit with jacks, racing jacks, breakers, wrench, torque etc. etc. I am afraid the wheels would come off when the kids are with me ...............

Then by all means take it to someone to do it for you. The dealer will be expensive. Any good tire shop would do.

Well, I take it you have made it to this point in your life without ever having to change a tire.

You are going to have to do this twice a year, so you might as well figure it out for yourself.

All you need is a jack and a lug wrench. It is discusting that BMW would sell cars without these items, but that is another story. If you have a second car you can probably use its.

Loosen the lug bolts on the wheel. There are four jack point son the car. They are easily found on the frame near the wheel (or with the owners manual). Jack the car up, remove a wheel, put the new wheel on, put the bolts on, lower the car.

The bolts should now be tightened with about 90 pounds of force. That is a strong twist or you can put the lug wrench on and step on it with about 1/2 your weight (or whatever). It's not rocket science.

The only other thing you should remember is that after driving about 50 miles, you should RE-TORQUE the bolts. You will have to do this no matter who changes the wheel.

Aluminum wheels are softer than steel wheels and the bolts can loosen a bit.

The worst thing that can happen is you will feel a vibration when driving from a wheel that is not bolted tightly. Nothing will fall off the car.

Learn to do this. Even if you have to get someone to help you the first time.

Call me spoiled. I know how to change tires (done it many times) and I have space where I could store four of them, but I chose to pay to store my unused 4 wheels/tires in a local tire shop and go there to have them switched. Costs me $75/season (i.e., twice a year) for storage and mounting. Life is good.

Spoiled!!

To each his own, I have better things to spend my money on. It's on par with changing a lightbulb for me.

BMW sells a jack/wrench kit for about $200.

The jack is really solid and fits the car, the wrench is pre-torqued to BMW spec to your kids will not see the wheel turn left as you turn right. I got the set and changing the wheels myself took about one hour the firs time (I am sure next time I can do in 45 minutes).

Yes, it's part number 71106773536. I may look into getting it and starting to do this the next "season" if I feel like lugging my tires around and saving some money after a couple of seasons

I did it!

Hey NoFlash, I took my time to get the jack and lug wrench but I finally did change the wheels by myself. It certainly wasnt as hard as I thought it would be. I am break even now with the investment and 100% ROI the next time. Not a bad deal Thanks again for your help.

One more question. When changing the front wheels is there a way to stop them from rotating? Its a little tricky to match up the lug nut openings when they are constantly moving unlike rear wheels.

Congrats!

Happy to help.

Yes, you can stop the wheels from turning by loosening the lugs nearly all the way while the car is still on the ground. Then jack it up and take the lugs off by hand.

BTW, I am truly thrilled that you took the time to do it for yourself.

Has somebody actually bought this jack kit? I just don't want to spend the money and find out that the top of the jack doesn't fit in the plastic jacking point any better than the crappy jack I already own.

Thanks
Dave

I bought it and used it. It fits perfectly. It is sturdier than the old e46 jack and even the old 5 Series. It also comes with a pre-set torque wrench that is simply precious.
