You only have to make sure the price of the goods is under $1,000, shipping is not included in the $1,000 limit However, if you exceed the $1,000, duty is payable on the value of the goods, and GST is payable on the value of the goods + shipping/insurance |

Customs Duty is payable on the declared value of the goods if that value is more than $1,000 AUD.

i'm not quite sure but i remember this is how it works for private imports, your total cost would be:
Value of goods Adds import tax (10%) Adds custom duty (10%, if value >$1k) Adds shipping If you have a custom clearance broker, ring them up and they'll sort the custom drama out for you with a fee. You can get them to deliver to your door step as well. |

Choosing Advans because they are an awesome performance tyre that get close to semi-slick performance. The other one I've been looking at are the Dunlop Direzza star-specs. Both are a significant upgrade from the Conti/Bridgestone runflats. Man, this import thing is confusing. So from what I gather it seems that as long as the value of the goods (excluding shipping) is below AUD$1,000, then everything's sweet.

Thanks for clearing things up! The 4 Advans add up to just over $900, with shipping it's $1,200. I'm hoping that won't cope a massive customs fee.

You wont, I had the same thing with my tyres from Tirerack and customs duty is based on the declared value of the goods
http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp shows how it is calculated, the shipping is seperate and only used if the goods are over $1,000 One important point is though, the value of AUD$1,000 is on the day the items are shipped, not the day you pay. Sometimes if it is close, and the exchange rate fluctuates you may slip over the $1,000 but hopefully it stays stable! |

Import Duty = Duty is applied to "customs value". For motor parts can be 10%-15%. Racing parts are less than road car parts. GST = Is applied to Value of Taxable Importation (VOTI) T&I = Amount paid to transport and insure goods to Australia VOTI = Customs Value + Customs Duty + T&I Eg Aftermarket Intercooler Brand XYZ Customs Value $2,000 Customs Duty = 10% = $200 T&I = $100 VOTI (CV+Duty+T&I) = $2,000 + $200 + $100 = $2,300 GST = $230 Total = $2,530
