This seems like a pretty good opportunity to jump on this ship. Unfortunately, shipping is very expensive but the AUD seems too good to last. Anybody interested?

My quote door to door from tirerack for 4 x Conti standard size was only $900 aussie.

Thats still under the limit.

I chose the E93 M3 front sway bar which is 28mm but unlike the E90/E92 it has a kink in it. I don't think there is much between the 2 sway bars but I didn't think there would be as many gains replacing the sway bar with a sway bar of the same size, although it is heavier and stronger - even though it is still hollow.
The kink in the 135i sway bar is 19mm thick. The E93 sway bar is 28mm, with a 26.5mm kink. It's quite a bit of difference. Also, changing out the soft stock bushings in the 135i help a lot as well.

With shipping, my quote for 4 Advan Neovas is significantly over AUD$1,000. I'm guessing it is better to split the shipment.

@BMWRX and blingers: Try Dan@UnitedBMW (forum member) for cheap genuine BMW parts from the USA.

How much are the tyres alone?

You only have to make sure the price of the goods is under $1,000, shipping is not included in the $1,000 limit

However, if you exceed the $1,000, duty is payable on the value of the goods, and GST is payable on the value of the goods + shipping/insurance

Can i ask why you selected the Advans ?? - Is it sizing , if you change the sizing are you using different rims

Really curious now

Customs Duty is payable on the declared value of the goods if that value is more than $1,000 AUD.

i'm not quite sure but i remember this is how it works for private imports, your total cost would be:

Value of goods
Adds import tax (10%)
Adds custom duty (10%, if value >$1k)
Adds shipping

If you have a custom clearance broker, ring them up and they'll sort the custom drama out for you with a fee. You can get them to deliver to your door step as well.

I'm upping the sizes to 225 at the front and 255 at the rear. Our stock 261M rims can handle this width with no problems.

Choosing Advans because they are an awesome performance tyre that get close to semi-slick performance. The other one I've been looking at are the Dunlop Direzza star-specs. Both are a significant upgrade from the Conti/Bridgestone runflats.

Man, this import thing is confusing. So from what I gather it seems that as long as the value of the goods (excluding shipping) is below AUD$1,000, then everything's sweet.

Exactly right

My suggestion is get them delivered to your door or you will be heaps of other airport fees (I've learnt the hard way)

Thanks for clearing things up! The 4 Advans add up to just over $900, with shipping it's $1,200. I'm hoping that won't cope a massive customs fee.

You wont, I had the same thing with my tyres from Tirerack and customs duty is based on the declared value of the goods

http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp shows how it is calculated, the shipping is seperate and only used if the goods are over $1,000

One important point is though, the value of AUD$1,000 is on the day the items are shipped, not the day you pay. Sometimes if it is close, and the exchange rate fluctuates you may slip over the $1,000 but hopefully it stays stable!

Customs Value = Can be based on original country purchase price or rated on Australian "as landed" value

Import Duty = Duty is applied to "customs value". For motor parts can be 10%-15%. Racing parts are less than road car parts.

GST = Is applied to Value of Taxable Importation (VOTI)

T&I = Amount paid to transport and insure goods to Australia

VOTI = Customs Value + Customs Duty + T&I

Eg Aftermarket Intercooler Brand XYZ
Customs Value $2,000
Customs Duty = 10% = $200
T&I = $100
VOTI (CV+Duty+T&I) = $2,000 + $200 + $100 = $2,300
GST = $230

Total = $2,530

If you order certain items such as tyres, customs sometimes do a quarantine check which is around another $90 too. I've paid this fee for tyres before as well as my coilovers.
