Learned how to drive in a manual 1958 Mercedes 190S, 4 on the column, had manuals til' I inherited, in 84', an automatic Ford, then acquired the 71' Skylark which also had an auto, took the Ford for granted, treated the Skylark like a manual. The BMW 135i is beastly, beautiful, demanding your involvement, hey, I thought I was divorced.

I have only ever owned manual cars. If they offered DCT I'd probably opt for one of those (this is one of the features I like about the Evo X MR) but I'd rather have a manual then a traditional auto.

Just to kill this thread.

Getrag does not make a six speed rear wheel drive AMT box.

BMW 1 Series Convertible:
With the new BMW 1 Series convertible, there is a decidedly sporty emphasis. This explains why ZF is supplying a choice of manual transmission or quick shifting automatic 6-speed transmission. The shift system and the converter round off the ZF driveline. On the chassis side, components, bearings, twin-tube dampers, spring struts, and modern steering technology from ZF Lenksysteme can be found: e.g. the energy-saving Servolectric electric power steering system, the steering column, or the optional Active Steering system with steering pump.

same system as:

Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé
The fourth model in the Phantom range uses an automatic 6-speed transmission to transmit 720Nm and 453HP. Highly-developed chassis and steering components such as the Servotronic and steering pump from ZF Lenksysteme ensure that this power is delivered to the road in a flawlessly majestic manner. Twin-tube dampers on the front and rear axles give this luxury saloon tremendous drive dynamics and comfort.

and last but not least...

a thread i started long ago.

Nothing is as good as a manual tranny, especially in a car like the 135i, which begs to be driven

All this talk about DSG... Heck, I just came from the DSG, and yes it is an amazing automatic... But it's still not as good as a manual... it's still an automatic.

All this talk about traffic... Biggest B.S. baby's excuse I've ever heard! I live in California. I know about traffic. We also have some great roads to have fun driving. Those experiences make the manual worth it. Those that blame traffic should just admit that they don't like to shift or don't know how to.

Also, those with automatics won't admit this, but they like to eat in their car more often, and that's another reason they drive that slushbox.

The 1-Series is too good a performer to dilute it with an auto-tragic tranny. It makes no sense to me to compromise such a great car.

6-speed manual... The only way to fly!!

In my area, eating while driving is the least of our problems compared to reading, applying make-up and, of course, the ever present cell phone!

BTW, does anyone know the average failure rate of BMW autos vs. sticks? Seems like lots of folks on Roadfly report slush boxes going out prior to 100k miles, which is not the case with manuals.

Gosh, why even buy a BMW? Might as well buy an automatic Corolla if driving is so disconnected. What a shame.

I've been driving manuals for a while now, but sometimes I just wish I would have gotten the steptronic. Chicago traffic is killing my legs.
