Oil low.....weird??
So this morning drove to work and got a warning that I was a quart of oil low. My car has 5400 miles on it...is this normal for it?

Happened to me around that mileage as well. It's normal and, strangely enough, not covered under our maintenance program. The told me to fill it with any equal spec oil.

Its normal .. just add the necessary quart.
also, to add to Jerichos statement above. ( nothing against the OP...just took an opportunity to rant on a sore subject of mine for years ) Its not covered under Maint / Warranty just like washer fluid... it gets used, and you refill it, tires loose air, you stop and set the tire pressure. there shouldn't be any expectation of coverage. Or that a dealer should do it for someone for free some would argue that a BMW shouldnt consume oil ??? ( for a miriad of reasons...like it cost 50,60, 80, 100k, well it does..and it is a characteristic of the design..its only got 2,3,5,8,10k miles... so what ??? its normal now some dealers do it as a GESTURE of goodwill and top it off for customers for free.... and still get burned.. they create the "everytning is covered monster" and then have to deal with that for ever... agrhhhhhh Rant Off... return to regulararly schedeuled show...

^^^ I have read your rant 3 times and still can't figure out whether you think it should be covered or not...

Mine burned a quart in the first 5K miles. My dealer toppd it off for free no questions asked. At 55K I have yet to burn any more oil, guess its just a side effect of the break in process.

My dealer said to look for Castrol but Mobil1 or any other synthetic was perfectly fine.

As long as it's full synthetic you can mix and match brands and in a pinch weights....but never mix dino oil with synthetic...

I'm talking about using Mobil instead of Castrol. I'm talking about adding 1 quart of Mobil to 6 quarts of Castrol. Idk it doesn't sit right with me

I'm talking about the same thing. No issues whatsoever.

I'd also periodically check the oil level through the computer so that you won't be surprised in the future.
Both my 128i and 328i burn only about 1/4 quart in 6,000 miles and since I change it at 8~10k, I never have to add. But as you are still "breaking in" your motor and it is a turbo, 1 quart in 5k isn't unusual. Also, the last time I checked, buying 5w30 BMW branded synthetic from my dealer cost the same or less than Mobil 1 0w40 from a parts store. Tom |
