Why do some people call a BMW a "BM?"

I'm sorry, but in my book, B.M. means Bowel Movement, whereas BMW means Bavarian Motor Works. Is BMW really too long of an abbreviation for people to say?
All my Filipina friends refer to BMWs as BMs. What's up with this?

Could be the same reason many of us here find it strange that a BMW is referred to as 'bimmer'.

my parents usually say BM and sometimes I say BM too (only to family members though). It's just sometimes it's easier to just say BM instead of BMW. Like i know what my parents mean when they say BM.

For a long time here in South Africa, BMWs were affectionally and fondly known as 'BMs'. Bimmer was a term one would only seldomly hear from US movies. However, lately it seems 'Bimmer' is being used more often locally.

"Double you" is just such a drawn out letter. BM is like shrinking it down 60%.

BM is a common term here in Australia -- Bee-Em

Bimmer is also commonly used, as is the incorrect Beamer, which I correct when I hear.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the shortening. But I have grown up hearing them referred to as BMs. Just as MBs are referred to as Mercs... can't imagine anyone wanting to come up with a nickname for a Lexus though - well not a nice one anyway.

BM is a well accepted term here in HK. Sometimes we may say BM "doub" too.

Only because it is not a term used in the US, so you have other associations with the acronym.

Every area has it's own linguistic quirks. It's not wrong, it is just different.

I bet you wouldn't know what a fritz and sauce sanger is... But then again I don't have a pocket book, I have a wallet.

Jamie brought out a good point, BM is just like any other local slangs, it's not wrong, just different. Pretty cool, never knew that some folks use BM as short for BMW's before, now I know.

In Russia, they say "Be-Ha", which is a slang way to say the letter B. I guess they are uber lazy.

Bee Ems or Bee Em Dubs is what we call them in the UK. Also we call them Beemers - just like every other country in the world except the US.

Now I'm in the US I'm supposed to say 'Bimmer'? What a bunch of hogwash!

BEEMER!
