The 'button' think only moves up as you pull the handle, but comes straight back down when you release it. Pulling it up a second time does nothing, the button comes up, then straight down again.

I pulled the thing at least 10 times in that video.

I found this feature out when I got mine and freaked out, apparently its some feature so you can turn your car on, warm it up and leave it locked while you do other stuff in your house.

I think though (gotta try it again), once you open the door it wont start without the key.

Yes, that's if the car has NOT been locked by the key fob.

As you can see in the video (and tested by myself in Christine), if the car is locked by the fob and someone is inside, they CANNOT get out.

As said previously, all that happens is the lock button pops up and then down again straight away - doesn't matter if you do it twice (as per standard operating procedure after auto-lock when driving), 3 times, 4 times etc.

Alex, you are 100% correct. I remember in my previous car (06/ 330ci) which was NON CA, that I mentioned to my wife that if someone tried to steal the car once it was locked with the fob, that even if they smashed the side windows, that the would be thief still could not open the doors and would hVe to climb through the broken window to get in and out of the car.

My car doesn't have CA. If I lock it while inside with the fob, or with the central lock button - pulling the door handles twice opens the door. I also have the factory alarm, and I don't know if that is a factor or not.

Ok, I tried it last night and sure enough, I can lock myself in my car (non-CA). Turn the car off, remove the key, open the door, close the door, lock the doors with the key, and there you are, trapped in your twin turbo coffin.

I've got the alarm too.. but it seems you can't imprison yourself in your car. Strange.

This is a car you can lock a passenger in, get out, and slowly push off a cliff.

Mystery solved. Here is what you have to do, I tried it twice. My car is an '08 - it doesn't have CA, but it has the factory alarm.

Coming home from work today, I turned it off, removed the fob - opened the door, closed the door, pressed the lock button on the fob. My alarm activated and the clown nose was blinking. THe doors were in the locked position.

I then tried to open the door with the door handle - it wouldn't open - am I trapped?

No.

One press of the 'unlock' button on the dash, now the door opened.

Opening the door also caused the alarm to go off.

I repeated the steps above, with the same result.

I can press the unlock button until my arm gets sore, but the doors won't unlock.

Lol... Somewhere in Australia.... a 1 Series BMW Owner has locked him/herself in their car and is seeing if they can escape. No-one ever told me that BMW would transfer mere mortals into Houdinis!
