Can you smell that?

Is there a reason behind why I get a noticeable 'air freshener' smell whenever the windcreen washer is used?

It's not unpleasant, just unexpected.
Car has not gone through first bottle of fluid yet, maybe there's a scent in the water?
Perhaps having the convertible makes it more noticeable?

I'm sure someone here will know and I can then get on to ponder other mysteries.

I smell it too, I thought it just must be the additive/detergent they use to help wash the windscreen

It's because the windshield wiper fluid has that 'detergent' scent. That scent is passed through the ventilation system into the interior cabin. If you press the circulate button on the ventilation control, wash your windshield, you should not smell the fluid.

Sort of on topic but I reckon the water level in the washer bottle never changes, mine is always full. I wash my screen maybe 3 times a week and I just never seem to have to fill it up?

The capacity is 6 liters. I filled it up the other day after getting a message that it was empty on my idrive. This is the first time I filled it up since getting the car in Sept 2008.

I normally buy those 250mL BMW washer fluid bottles of pink stuff from the spares dept. Pop the contents of one bottle into the water tank and fill with water. Has a nice fruity scent.

i noticed a smell too, just smells like soap or windex nothing crazy, 6 liters is a large tank especially if you only do a quick rinse with the fluid.

I really like the smell - Its definatley the BMW stuff because my husband got them to put in in last time he was there.

I only every spray them once a month, but Kev on the other hand sprays it every 2 seconds when he drives. It send me insane because it puts crap all over the car plus he always is running the headlights so the crazy headlight sprayer goes off as well.!!!!!

yeah it's not a bad smell, in any way, quite the opposite.

Maybe BMW can release it as a designer womens fragrance, Eau De ________???
(Reminds me of Richie Beneud's 'Chateu de la Fleur'). Very Upmarket.
