What are you looking at Nik? I'm looking at an outlet for my inner hoon rather than tracking my car. Not sure how i'd "cart" one of these around though... |

Me and my mate were looking at buying one last year actually, then when I looked at costs I was really close to buying a formula ford instead.
Is he racing it in a series?

My partner owns a kart shop in WA. www.kartmart.com.au
We have a CRG factory kart from Italy, 125cc, 42hp, 6speed which are about $18k and do about 180km/h. Of course, you can get much lower specs ones and can pick up shifters for under 10k second hand. Also a twin engine 125 which puts out around 80hp and has double the torque. This thing is fun to drive, especially in the wet Rotax/Leopard/Fireball 125's, 28hp and on a full size car track with the right gearing you could probably hit 160 or so. However, you can't just jump in to 125's anymore, you need to do a season of 125 restricted to "prove" yourself. I'm not sure on the exact power figure but it probably goes down to 20hp. Probably set you back 5k for a new cheap one to 10k+ for top of the line Then you go down to yamaha 100S (around 15hp), and then the yamaha 100J (11hp). It might not sound much but when a hire kart can range from 4hp => 8hp and are setup like a dog. Even a 100J is great fun. Some info: http://www.karting.net.au/how-to-get-started-in-karting

Rotax's are 40 odd hours.
I think leopards are 20, 100J/S are 20 40 might not sound like much but when a race goes for 5->10mins and 4/5 races a day, it's only under 1 hour of use. But, you get the people that want an engine refresh all the time too. Same with people wanting new tyres every race meet :P
