Radio turned off while driving
I was driving today while listening to my iPod and all of a sudden the music turned off. I looked down and all of the lights on the head unit were off. It was just a black screen. Then it came back on after about 20 seconds.
Did I accidently buy a volkswagen and not realize it? Last edited by BrokenVert; 06-15-2010 at 07:10 AM.. |

Mine's started doing this almost every time I leave for work in the morning for the last month or so. I thought it might have something to do with my iPod, so I took it out and it still does it.
I'm not sure, but it seems like it has something to do with the HD radio station I'm usually listening to. Typically I would start the car and the radio would come on for a second in analog, then switch to HD. Now it seems like when it tries to switch it hangs up, and then restarts after a couple of seconds. Once it's restarted the HD seems to no longer work. I'm not positive that's exactly what's going on, because I just realized this HD connection a couple of days ago, and I'm still watching it to make sure that's actually what's going on before I take it in. |

Jeremy that would be a good theory if it didn't do it to me while I was listening to my iPod.
Edit: I should add that to the OP |

Mine does it sometimes when I'm listening to the ipod too, but I think it's always tuned to the NPR station that's in HD. I'm out of town all week, so I can't test it, but I think the tuner is still working in the background, and when it trys to switch to HD, that's when it locks up. The reason I think this is because my HD tuner no longer works, and the point where it shuts down every day is exactly the same.... when I come out of my underground garage and it normally switches over. You other guys that are having this issue.....do you have the HD radio option? And is it turned on? Lets see if we can narrow this down a bit. I'm about 6k miles from being out of warranty, and I want to get this taken care of before then and have no faith whatsoever in my service department's ability or willingness to diagnose it. |

Ahh I see Jeremy. I'm 10k away from warranty less driving. I have HD radio. I'll have to turn it to a jumpy station and then put my iPod on to test

You may be going deaf. Do you hear any ringing?
Do you hear any voices? (different problem)

Mine did this as well when I was using an ipod. Every now and then the radio would just stop working and the screen would go blank. I took it to the dealer and he seemed to know what the problem was. He said that it was a problem with the computer ????? Anyway, he re-botted the computer and put some updated software on it and the radio has worked fine since then.

Ok, I verified this today.
I didn't have the iPod in the car at all. I pulled out of my parking garage with the radio on a station that doesn't have an HD channel. I let it go for about 5 minutes, which would normally be plenty of time for it to turn off, then switched it to my NPR station, which has HD. The analog signal was fine, and then as soon as it tried to switch it locked up and restarted. After that, HD no longer works at all. |

I was listening to 1010wins which switches HD to normal radio and it had no trouble doing so.
But it shut off on me yesterday while listening to iPod. I think I need to find an exorcist |

I have had my sound system go suddenly silent while listening to my ipod. it doesn't happen often, and it lasts about 7-8 seconds.
sometimes, when I restart my car and turn on my ipod (I don't have the usb interface), there is no sound. if I toggle through to CD or radio, the sound comes back and is then fine. doesn't happen often, but enough times that I noticed it... my car is due for its first service (since I've owned it) soon, so we'll see... |
