Need tire advice, street and autocross tire setup
Hello,
Sorry for the new thread, I'm sure its been beat like a horse, but I'm in a bit of a pinch. I'll make it quick. I'm looking to get into autocross, just did my first yesterday. My rear tires are past the wear bars, need replaced very soon. I can pick up 2 used 255/35 Michelin Pilot Sport 2 with 7/32 of tread (same tires I have now) for $200 locally. Not a bad deal BUT they're run flats which everybody says to throw away. I'm wondering if I should just buy those and call it a day for tires and continue to use the 18" run flats for the rest of the autocross season (maybe into next if 7/32" last that long). Or if I should invest in better tires (being an autox novice). I have a square set of 17x8" et47 style 44s so I'm thinking I could buy some good extreme performance tires for those to make for dedicated autox use, and then put cheaper summer tires on my daily M261 18s. Would this be worth the effort/money? Or would I be better off just buying some good tires for my 18s and not fork the cash for 2 sets of tires? If I were to use the 17" for dedicated autox wheels, what tire sizes would be optimal? Staggered for our high torque? Or square? Is rotating autox tires important? 255s all around would be nice but I don't think thats possible in front, is it (17x8 et47)? btw I am lowered on STs. Thanks Last edited by CrimsonXV; 06-29-2015 at 10:08 AM.. |

235/45/17 Hankook RS3 or Dunlop ZII StarSpecs would get you in great shape. They are perennial favorites and very affordable. Congrats on your 1st autoX, get ready to be broke for the rest of your life There are probably a hundred different threads on every autoX forum in the world on this topic. The next event you go to look around and see what some of the other street tires guys are running. You will see 95% of them on RS3's, StarSpecs, or the new Bridgestones.
