Are front coilovers standard on the 135i?
Surprisingly, not an easy question to google.
Is the standard setup on the front of a 135i coilovers? I got the car second hand and am looking to upgrade the suspension, I've got separate springs at the back, but there are already coilovers at the front. Is this standard, or do I need to look closely at what else might've already been done? |

Today I learned the difference between a shock and a strut. It's embarrassing how little I know about suspension.
So I take it people put coilover shocks at the back (currently looks like a separate spring and shock?) and adjustable struts at the front with heavier springs all round. Thanks. |

The difference between coilovers and macpherson struts is fairly subtle. The difference is only a matter of the diameter of the springs. Coilover springs typically have an internal diameter of 60mm or 2.5". The internal diameter of the stock front springs is around 120mm and they are tapered to smaller size near the body of the strut.
On the rear suspension, none of the aftermarket setups are true coilovers, except they may use coilover spring sizes. |
