comments on a custom exhaust?
guys,
thinking about having a custom exhaust shop make a - from turbo to muffler 3 inch exhaust.. so, quote is for 3 inch ss 304 from turbo all the way reduced to stock size diameter muffler entrance.. for 550$$ would it be wise to do it this way rather than buying a d/p wich we all know connects to mid with a 2 and change flange and is 2 n change all the way back.. or going full 3 from turbo exit to 2 n change at stock muffler.. I figured if im gonna buy a dp for 300 and then install it for lets say another 100..or less whatever.. it would be better cost wise and perf wise to go 3 all the way.. wich would include res del and secondary cat del if my car has sec cat del.. mind u 1 yr warranty on everything installed . with ss 304 this is a quick post cuz im at work.. if I missed something or aint makin sense with my explaination lmk.. but would be interested in yalls 2 cents.. the only reason I wouldn't want 3 all the way back is I believe from what ive read.. would b way too loud..

Wait why all the sarcastic posts? Is there actually an obvious reason not to do that?

Oh no I definitely get that and I love it, but normally I see that in response to silly questions. This time I'm actually curious! Haha

C'mon, elite... I wouldn't expect you to get your panties in a bunch over a couple of funny posts (or at least trying to be funny).

$550 doesn't sound like too bad of a price.
But, Is it quality work? How crappy will the bends be (not that there are many)? I thought the N55 had 4" DP options? So why not try and stuff 4" under there (within reason, there's no such thing as too big) I kinda like to see a product before I buy it. Custom made exhaust is really subjective and it's hard for me to say if I'd buy W/O seeing previous work. I'm lucky enough to have a shop that does mandrel bends nearby, but they quoted me far more than I thought it was worth. |

well its a exhaust only shop.. and the pic on their site has a 135i on the lift so I called em up.. been in business awhile and he specified that to bend the ss he would need to reconfigure machine .. without a doubt I will go and check em out before I drop the loot on a promise..
I guess 4 could b an option.. im guessing they would do one str8 to rear mid rather than 2 small so maybe their is room for a 4..

no harm done brah.. just give me ur fucking 2 cents already I know if its shitty work.. its not worth 2 dollars.. but in essence .. its just a tube right.. why pay 500 for a berk and 350 for a vrsf and keep mids.. unless, some1 here has had issues or tells me ,hey bad idea mine corroded or idk.. I guess that's why I posted this

I put the BMW Performance exhaust (with y-pipe/resonator delete) on my 1er back in 2011 and I'm happy as a clam, but if you think they're a reputable shop, then I say go for it!

the other thing you may want to take into consideration is removal.
there may be things down the road that require removal of the exhaust for repairs, turbos for example. it's nicer to only have to remove the interfering section rather than the whole system. so if the exhaust is all slip fit/clamps (which love to rust together) or welded solid this may be an issue. Best option is slip fit and band clamp or flanges and bolted (or v-bands). but the cost of those is more than welded or clamped. |

Here's the bottom line.
After putting the largest DP you can in there (N55=4inch) you won't suffer impacts from restrictions until you upgrade the turbo significantly. You'll be fine with stock catback even with PS2 turbo. I would imagine you may want a 3.5" catback section if you converted to a big single of the likes of a PR6266+ or BW EFR, but that is by far the exception. The only substantiated reason to upgrade the mids/axleback on a N55 is if you want a specific noise. The other guys were just having fun. IF you're hard set on custom work, make sure the DP section is as large as possible and the front O2 sensor placement doesn't throw codes or cause the sensor to burn up from heat. I would only accept mandrel bends and TIG welding on stainless steel with pictures of previous work to ensure the guy can weld properly. Also make sure the DP and mid sections have plenty of clearance from subframe and chassis bracing. If it's close you could get nasty vibrations during cornering or hard acceleration.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT.. as I don't plan on upping the size of the turbo.. yes its for noise.. figured id get same if not better noise instead of buying a 500 muffler and a 300 dp..

Buy a DP and have your shop modify the muffler. Look up PE muffler mod. No cats and straight through muffler will be plenty loud.
