Does coding ever get erased?
I'm thinking about upgrading my crap stock audio, and I know I'll need to code the car so that it won't do the fake equalizing on the way into the amp. When you get the car coded for this, does it stay that way for the life of the car? Will I need to re-code if I need a new battery? What about if I need a new ECU??
Thanks! |

Yes, coding can be erased or over written. That's why any coder worth their salt, saves your car's details before coding the car. That way IF you get a SW update... they can code your mods back in. You also want to save the original data codes - incase you need to return the car back to OE coding in the car's directory.
For instance IF you have the M3 digital speedo coded into the instrument cluster... IF you were to get an SW update from BMW, this "might be" erased. It might not. It just depends how the tech does the update. Easy or Expert - mode. What do you mean about the fake equalizer thing? IF you plan an audio upgrade... you will need to have the HU coded to work properly with your amps. Depending on your setup. There are many coders who can code remotely - so this all is a moot point.

Thanks. When you have the base stereo, from what I've been reading, what's coming out of the head unit is "equalized" in some way to make up for the fact there is no amp and the speakers are crap. So, if you add an amp and new speakers, you have to make sure what's coming out of the HU is normal, so the amp can effectively process it.

I don't doubt it can be erased but mine has not. The dealer updated the software at least twice after I coded and my changes are still there.
