This is true...
My sales lady said it doesn't need to be checked - ever - if the car needs oil, it will show a warning light and I must take it in to any dealer (within 250km's) and they will fill it up (no charge). I don't think she knew it had a dipstick, because the only thing she pointed out in the hood was the place to fill the washer fluid and the battery terminal :-)

How does one check the oil level on non i-Drive equipped cars?

You select oil level via the one control stalk on the steering wheel and the level is shown on the instrument cluster

This is innovative by BMW but there are somethings that I think should simply be included on a car. Electronic oil level is cool, but also have a dipstick. I always check my dipstick because I do not trust the faulty electronic systems. Oil is too important of a component to trust to some wires IMO.

agree 110% ... why have an electronic system for something as easy as a dipstick check of the oil level.

ive had my car run out of gas on the highway while the gas meter read I still had 1/4 tank of gas left... The electronics there were faulty... luckily nothing really bad can happen with the gas, but if that happened to me with low oil in the engine, then boom, there goes my engine All because of a faulty electronic sensor

wouldn't people want to see the color of their oil as well using the dipstick?

Telling anything from the colour of the oil is like predicting the future by reading the guts of a rabbit.

Oil is orange when very new and turns black after some use. Unless you are a master in telling different shades of black, there´s nothing to be learnt here....

I guess oil extractors can't be used on most E90s then?
