That sucks hayespn you're lucky it's not your daily driver. I got another one today. I dropped into my dealer the other day and he offered to update the software if it keeps persisting but it doesn't happen too often. I wonder when it's going to fail on me...

That's the worst thing - not knowing when the inevitable fail will occur.
What I know about mechanics could be written on a postge stamp but both of my long cranks have occured after the car sat idle for at least a few days. I wonder whether the fuel pressure in the high pressure section of the system is dropping (perhaps a leak somewhere in the pump) and so when starting it takes more cranks to build pressure back up (remembering that the HPFP is mechanically driven). This may just be the first symptom that the pump is starting to fail. I am away again next week so will be interesting to see if my pattern holds true. Frankly, with the number of occurences, I am surprised that a clear pattern hasn't emerged yet.

Nah I've mentioned it to them and it looks like they'll only give me a software reflash, I'd rather get the new pump so waiting for it to fail.

First long crank for me yesterday morning, having not driven the car for a few days and a cold night in the garage. I'll be keeping a close eye on it. My first scheduled service is due in a couple months (already had an intermediate oil change), so hopefully I won't need a warranty visit before then.

Has anybody actually paid for a new pump and if so what is the parts and labour cost from a BMW dealer?

I had long cranks every day at first start up for about 3 weeks before I took it in for a repair. The car now sits at the dealership as they re running some tests. 10.2008 built 40k kms Europe. Do the long cranks can damage something else in the engine if not addressed in the early stage?

My engine was all good until they did software update. Within days i started to get long cranks. Getting longer and more frequent now. BT cable has not picked up any codes which will get me a new hpfp but am collecting a random code at one a week. Have no idea what the codes mean. Prior to software update my ecu never threw a code. Just waiting now i guess for the pump to fail.

Cool stuff, glad you got it replaced.
I curious, did the service dept. give any comments about the HPFP problem while you were there? |

Nothing out of the ordinary. Neither the service dept or myself were surprised it was the HPFP that failed. I was in and out, great service. My service guy also update the tail-light seals. I was due for a recall in the upcoming weeks but they changed them out for me whilst the HPFP was being replaced.

I'm almost beginning to feel like the odd one out (quiet, TimMc ) given I'm still "cranking" just fine.
*shrug* warranty is good for another year and a bit, so I guess I'll just wait and see. It'd be interesting to find out the stats on what the fail rate is like ie. 40% of all pumps go spang. |
