turbo whine/whistle louder in cold weather?
I posted a similar question on the main forum last week, but I'm shifting the focus of my question for the Canadian forum.....
Have any of you with 135i's noticed that the colder it is outside (it was about -13 in Ottawa this morning), the more pronounced the turbo whine/whistle is? I hear it at part throttle, at certain points between 2000-3000 rpm, with the engine fully warmed up. Just wondering if any of you have noticed a correlation between increased turbo whine and cold weather? Thanks! |

lol, when I had my MKV GLi the turbo would get louder in Winter. It concerned the hell out of me since it was normally quiet. My first thought was a boost leak or something, but sure enough, when it got warmer it quieted down.
I liked the sound while it lasted though. |

Yup definitely it's more audible during the cold weather at lower rpms.

Thanks guys for the feedback... hopefully this is normal. The funny thing is I've only heard it in isolated instances. This morning, it was -27 C, and the turbo was silent.

It happened to my X6 35i as well (N55 engine).
Same noise between 2k - 3k RPM. I brought my car to the dealer for inspection at the date of your posting. They heard it and told me that it definitely have a problem. After a month, today, they told me that they cannot find the problem. BMW is aware of the issue, but does not have a fix. So I guess for now, we can just assume that this noise is normal? |
