Golf R

Hi Guys....

I've been reading quite a bit into this new GOLF R punchbuggy thing thats come onto the market. From what i hear, its great value for money (rrp 48k if iirc) and has a way better weight distribution than the old R32. The old R32 was definately on my radar before i bought my 130i.... and when the 130i's price dropped closer to the R32, i was seduced by its ideal 50/50 weight distribution and rear wheel drive.

However.... with the new GOLF R in a way lower price bracket, should i try to get a trade on my less than one year old 130i and reduce my repayments?? (or most probably be lucky to break even....

Will you get enough selling the 130 to cover the payout? Without obviously knowing your financial setup, I'd be VERY surprised if you did.
Trust me, I had EXACTLY the same thoughts when the pricing for the R came out.

I knew a few guys who've bought an R. It becomes a lot more expensive if you start throwing in options e.g. leather, xenons are all options. $50k fasts becomes $65k and LCT just makes it worse. There's also a 4 - 6 month wait on them.

If you can get out of your lease and cut costs then hey, why not. Turbo AWD is always good fun

I was looking at these as well, but as of 3 weeks ago - they couldn't even tell you the price. Speculation was rife that with only a few options it would have been in the early 70's. Problem with the Golf is that they are just so common. I live in a street in the inner city that is maybe 50 meters long - and there were 8 at last count (Not all R's - but they all look the same IMHO)

I used to swear by AWD (Subarus).

Now I love RWD.

I'm very tempted by the Golf R when I come back to Melbourne next year. And it's made worse by the fact my parents in NZ just picked up their brand new black 5 door R. I want to go and drive it!

Only downside (apart from the expensive options) is that in Australia it is detuned compared to NZ. 188kW vs 199kW. Probably doesn't make that much difference but still...

I've been tempted for a while by the R36 and then I thought mmm wait for the R20.

I think the big thing about the R20 is the price, however I went to a dealer on the weekend and thought nah!

Back to the old faithful 130 for the time being lol

You know what, it's probably a fun car to drive.

However, as Scoobs said, they're everywhere, and it'll still look like a Golf. Golf is an interesting choice of word actually, it conjures up an image for me of a game that fun, but mostly a meaningless waste of time where you often drive somewhere you didn't mean to and end up in trees.

For the OP: Jozeff I have no idea what sort of financing arrangement you have in place, but if you check your schedule of payments or loan balance, you'll probably have negative equity given you're a very short period into your arrangement. this might help -> https://www.mybmwaccount.com.au/BMW/MyAccount.aspx

Also, as mra said, after you option it out with some bits (VW and Audi are obviously similar here) you end up with an expensive hot hatch, so even if you managed to trade your 130 you'd probably have to get a bare-bones model to meet your goal of lowering your payment.

If I get the chance I'll go drive one, but I'm guessing it'll remind me of the S3 I drove before I tested the 135i. Fun, but it won't push my starter button like my car does.

can't say I'd care about how many others were on the road........

I'd take a 3door Golf R over the 135i i think...

Looking at getting one to replace SWMBO's 07 Golf GTi. 5 door DSG with leather is $61K driveaway, and a six month wait. Bare in mind this is WA so probably $2K cheaper in the east. Drove a loaded up R, quite nice, but was much happier to jump back into the 135, the VW DSG is nowhere near as smooth as the BMW DCT, the seats are not in the same league. Handling is good, power is decent. Overall seems like alot of dough for not alot imo, its slower and handles worse than a $44k WRX, .

Honestly I am trying to push her into a 320d (had one as a loaner for a couple of days with the M-sport pack), had plenty of punch when you got it going, looks better (IMO), has the great steering wheel and sports seats, more room, and will probably be worth more in 3-4 years.

I'm actually considering one as a replacement for my 125i. Yet to test drive one but will share my thoughts once I do. On paper, looks pretty decent for the money.

I'm wondering whether we'll get to test one on the VW Drive day in September. There's a few Sydney forum members going on the 16th so will post thoughts if we get hold of one.

I am aware we will be flogging the new GTi.

I went on the VW drive day up here in Brissie. The format was:
1) food and briefing
2) split into two groups
2a) slalom and skidpan
2b) gunning the Golf GTI and GTD (diesel) around the track. Make sure you choose the GTI and not the GTD. All the cars have DSG Gearboxes.
3) Hot lap with Golf Rs. Heaps of fun, but they don't let you drive them! Whilst you wait for your lap, you can try the reverse assist in one of their other cars.

I had the previous model R32, an 06' or 07'. Heavy pig that made a lot of noise but wasn't very fast. Had that POS for just over 6 months before taking an epic haircut to offload it.

VW in general aren't too bad - just steer clear of Garry Crick if you go down that path

Went to the VW Day at Eastern Creek same format as Brisbane. Hot lap with 4 in car was good --200 ks down the straight.

I've driven the new Golf R a couple of times now as i'm trying to decide on a new one of these or a second hand 135i.

I was very impressed with the Golf and i liked the dsg gearbox, it is pretty quick and although it hasn't got the aural sound of the R32's six it still sound's pretty good.
The 135i is no doubt a lot quicker and build quality of both cars is obviously top notch and for the price the R is a good deal.

Jury is still out on which one i will decide on but at the moment the 135i is slightly ahead.

Oh that's just too funny.

Top notch build quality on 1er except for ... HPFP failing, third brake lights cracking and falling out, tail lights failing, seatbelt wear on front seat bolsters, windows that have a mind of their own ... the list goes on.

Yeah - I am a bit surprised of the build quality of the 1er... This is my 3rd beamer.

Purchased new just over a week ago.

The fuel flap paint was all "crazed". Looked like the paint was flaking off before the clear coat applied. Had to be replaced. Noticed a similar imperfection on rear quarter (opposite side) which I will be showing to BMW this week. And the leather door trims passenger side have several noticeable marks. Very very surprised that this car not only left the factory like that, but also passed by the dealer.

God help me if I have all the other issues mentioned above !!

must have been a Friday arvo build me thinx

Well i am comparing it to my current car which is a WRX

I didn't realise there were so many issue with the 135i. Maybe i am better off with the Golf then.

Bad news played at the same volume sounds louder to most people.

The biggest issue I've had with my car was a tail-light going which got replaced in under 24 hours.

There's no other car I'd buy if I had my time over again.
