Do all E8X models have the same brake calipers ?
Hi there guys,
Hope we're all keeping well during the current circumstances. My rear driver's side caliper recently started to stick making the car judder and the disc extremely hot. I stopped driving the car as soon as I noticed the problem and have been told I should get a new caliper. I tried to grease the caliper piston with brake fluid for a temporary fix and of course I fluffed it and the piston fell out. I definitely need a new caliper now lol. Im pretty sure the seal is bust. I simply wanted to ask if all of the E8X models ie E81 / E82 / E87 / E88 all have the same calipers ? Aside from the 123d the 135i as I understand these have the M Performance brakes. My car is a 2011 120d E82 M Sport. Image attached of the current mess. Thanks in advance guys. |

Look up your caliper part number on realoem.com
There aren't that many options on the E8X but this will be accurate for sure. A rebuilt caliper that comes clean and with new seals is pretty cheap. Also used from eBay is totally fine. You can also just buy new seals and slide pin boots. Probably available at the dealer.

Same caliper sticking on my 128i. BMW NA has no calipers or kits in the USA. FCP Euro shows nothing available. Ordered a rebuilt from O'Reilly Autoparts and they had to have one shipped in. Thursday I'll see what I get!

I'd recommend to check it out thoroughly. Once long ago I bought a rebuilt Mitsu Eclipse caliper and it showed up with steel shot inside the sliders, as if it'd been blasted to clean rust off but not cleaned further. Pretty stupid. I don't remember where I got it from but many shops sell from few actual sources.

I'm just happy to get one. I may just order a new one from BMW and keep it. Could take as long as 3-weeks though, so I'll spend the small change that O'Reilly's wants for the rebuilt and see how it goes. |

The rear caliper came in from O'Reilly in two days. It is cast with "BMW" and "Ate" in the body and included the carrier, new slide pins, boots, caps, bleeder screw, and new pad spring. All blasted, cleaned, re-coated, and rebuilt. Looks fine to me. I'll know more when I have the time to install it on Sunday.
Give the fact that no one else had one—not BMW or any of the usual suppliers—I'll consider $65 for this one at least a stop-gap measure to get me back on the road. |

Dang missed that in your post. Really surprising. I was able to find seals for my E46 several years back and it was much older at the time than the E82 is now.

I guess there were more E46s than E82s! RealOEM shows the repair kit only fits E8* cars.
I did notice that Zekhausen Racing sells an after-market (Centric?) seal kit but cylinder is "special order only". The rebuilt caliper from O'Reilly worked out fine. Everything is back together and working properly. |
