what I insisted to you was, lets say you took one Balanced Image, like you did, just a camera has no control of metering, to get background and foreground correct, without overexposing one or the other(From experience), your photos came out nice, because you metered them well, and got them properly to expose.. and the camera overexposes the rest.. I suggest you also take one underexposed foto to over lay, and than you take the brush tool, mask the background foto, and real the rest..

besides slight haloing, dont look like HDR to me.. referring to the photo I posted, do you know how that was done?

I use a combination of Aperture and Photoshop CS4.
