Anyone else NOT notice the CDV?

I've got about 350 miles on her, and I haven't noticed any difference shifting than any other car I've driven. No jerky shifts, all smooth. I always read horrible things about it, but I haven't noticed a thing. Anyone else? Those that have noticed "it", what exactly did it do and in what situation? I haven't "launched" her yet, so that could be the only reason to me of when it would be noticeable. Thanks.

I have at times noticed a bit of difficulty between shifts of first to second... it seems like i have to really pay attention and give a slight pause between these shifts...this is usually when I am in launch conditions... when I am just leisurely driving around town there is no problem...

I'm still not use to the clutch so I'm not sure if the things I've felt are CDV related, or just me getting use to the car.

One thing shifter related though... is it just me or does 1st gear feel like it's a slight angle? With my old car it was straight forward for first. On the 135i it almost feels like I have to angle toward the driver's side a tiny bit to get it in gear. Feels a little odd, but I'm sure I'll get use to it.

Also first gear seems to get up to RPM a little too quickly, at least compared to what I'm use to. I actually took off in 2nd once and that felt more normal to me.

I agree with you Dan. There was more than one time where I was wondering if I was in 1st or reverse because of the shifter angle lol. First is a very quick gear, I too have launched in second and thought it felt "normal"

1-2nd has nothing to do with the CDV, I suspect it has more to do with BMW over engineering the lower gears so that the gears box holds up over years of hammering.

I thought first gear went too quickly too, and found it sort of awkward. It's one of the reasons I bought the automatic. But I'm kind of regretting that now.

By a rather large margin, from gear 1st to 2nd, the 135 is the most difficult car to smoothly shift, I have ever driven. And, no, the 135 is not the second manual I have ever driven.

I think you need to remove the CVD before you make the conclusion. I did not think anything was wrong with the shifting with the CVD but heard all the hype so I went and did it. What a difference it made. I then could see the difference.

1-2 is probably on par with my previous g35. the 1er has a sweet spot of about 3.5k rpm and i have to get on the gas a bit sooner (due to throttle hesitation i suspect) to smooth out the shift.

You will notice the cdv however when you try to rev match downshift, especially into 2nd.

I have not had any problems shifting 1st - 2nd and find most shifts very smooth .. no problems here ..

I find my car shifts nice and smoothly! I do not notice any problems with the CDV and I am not planning on modifying mine. Having said that...there a several 1addicts that have modified the CDV and they are really happy with it. Sounds like it is an inexpensive change if anyone is dissatisfied with the 1-2 shift.

Guy's I've done the mod. Took about an hour. Was quite difficult to jack the car up properly. Having said that, after completing the CDV exchange (fitted a Riss CDV) the difference was quite noticeable. 1-2 gear seems most improved.

Also, you soon get used to the mod and don't really know its changed after a while. Also as the clutch now engages and disengages much more quickly, on the fly you often find the revs dropping a bit between shifts, whereas before the CDV restriction may have helped smooth things over here.

I guess whether you do or don't have this mod, your driving style should adapt either way in the end.

Just my 10$ worth.

Mad.

I learned to drive on a manual (25 years ago), and have owned nothing but MT's ever since.

Unless you shift very slow or you are rev'n high, this car does not shift smoothly from 1-2 with the CDV. I noticed the same type of response from my e46 330i. I bet it also had a CDV.

I will remove mine Sat and report back.

Yea, I think I will just remove it and see if I can tell any difference. Probably tomorrow. I will report back with any findings.

I too have similar issues with 1st to 2nd, I find that if you change with just the slightest bit of pressure on the accerator during shift, that smooths up the 1st/2nd change but its still pretty difficult!

Every other gear is fine for me.

ChrisK and Bizall, I look forward to hearing your opinions on the CDV. I have been holding off on installing mine.

What is the intended purpose of the CDV since it only seems to make things worse from what I am reading here? I have not experienced it personally yet - my car is due in a week.

I believe the intended purpose is to extend the life of the syncros.

I find it very easy personally.

The first thing I did when I got my car home was to go on this forum and search for "clutch replacement". It was the absolute worst clutch I ever owned san my Chevy Citation.

I had to shift like I was partially anesthetized to avoid a jerky shift.

That's when I first learned of the CDV. Since it's removal, the clutch is livable. My opinion of BMW dropped dramatically at that point, though after driving it balls out in Central Oregon, my respect has returned.

I'll do mine tomorrow by just taking the CDV out completely. Cheaper, and I will put it back anyway before going in for service.
