Wheel Rubbing Noise

Hey guys,

I tried searching for this, but it was really difficult since most topics were around clicking noises as opposed to what I am hearing.

I hear a slight rubbing noise on my front wheels and I have no idea what it is. The noise sounds as if a rotor may be a bit warped or something, because its not a constant noise, but its a consistent noise. It gets faster with speed, but always rubs at the same interval point.

I tried to take a video of it, and if you put the volume up really high you can hear it pretty well towards the end of the video. I took it into BMW service but of course they said it was "normal pad noise" on the rotor. There is no chance that I believe that because no other car does that.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Holy crap, I just got a new 135i with the M sports package and was looking at it tonight because I have the "EXACT" same issue, the noise is identical. I thought it might have been the tire rubbing the inside of the wheel well. Also my noise is coming from the front tires as well. Please if anyone knows what the hell is the cause of this noise post it, or if it is normal let us know because it is driving me nuts!

Yeah man its really obnoxious. Even though the dealer said its normal I am still not buying it, especially on a brand new 40k car.

I did a google search because I'm having the same issue and saw your video. Any more details on what the dealer told you? And have you got it fixed yet?

EDIT: 2012 135i with M sport package.

Do you guys have any vibration at speed? My friend bought a 1M brand new and had tire defects from the factory.

I thought I felt a bit of vibration a bit ago, but that must have been in my head or something cause its not there now

I've done some browsing and it sounds like the heatshield is rubbing against the rotor after built up brake dust. I'm gonna pull the wheel off this weekend and see if I can get behind it and clean it out/gently bend the heat shield away from the rotor and report back.

Ä° also have the same issue. i have a 135i M package & had the same noise. Ä° complained time & time again. Finally they replaced all 4 tires & the noise went away for a while but now its back on the other side. Took it into the dealer & of course nothing is wrong according to them. Ä° will be taking it back in until its fixed & the problem is resolved or Ä°'ll give the car back under the lemon law because this is not the only problem i've had with my car & i've only had my car a year in a half.

tried gently bending the heat shield with no luck, sprayed some cleaner back there as well with no luck. I'm trying to hunt down a jack to actually take the wheel off and see if something is lodged back in there.

This aggravated me, I started driving with the windows up.
Check your front tire pressure if you haven't, my RFTs made more noise when the pressure got low.

In the same boat. scraping noise from both sides and also have noticed clicking noise when the brakes are applied. Going to dealership and see what happens. 2nd Time for same thing. If anybody gets this fixed lets us know the issue.

I have never heard of the issue on the 2008 and a couple years after have the issue. What has changed on the newer 135i’s in the wheel/brake area?

And don’t let the dealer play games with you. Let them know you will call BMW NA if they can’t fix it. I had a warranty issue on my Z4 where they would not fix it. I called BMW NA and within an hour the dealer called me to say bring it in so they can fix it. They are nice as pie to me now since they know I will call BMW NA. I even had a good chat with the Service Manager to make sure things were good after I told on them and now the relationship is great.

What is going on here? I have a new '12 135i m sport. Heard a rubbing noise at low speed. Dealer investigated for several days; finally replaced all four tires and noise quit. Fine for a couple hundred miles, now back, but intermittently. Sounds like the same story as above! Any ideas?

Dude I honestly have no idea what is going on, its so annoying...I am throwing my winter wheels on soon and am going to see if the problem occurs with those. This way I will be able to pinpoint whether it is the summer wheels or something on the car itself

So took my 2011 in to the dealer twice for the same issue as above. Both times they swapped out the rims and tires with another set and said noise went away. They are saying it is the run flats making the noise. I think that is BS but I'm going to get new rims and tires anyway so will see if the noise is still their after that, then they can't say it is the runflats.

I just got my winter tires put on my 2013 and the noise stopped, so at least in my case it's the damn summer tires they are giving us.

I had the same problem on my 135i. Replaced the front tires from original runflats to Hankook V12 and the noise went away. I guess since our wheels are staggered and cant be rotated, our tires become choppy and make rotational noises after time.
