I know several DI audi drivers, and all of them have had significant issues with buildup. Bummer.

Boys allow me to get my mid afternoon coffee....well past the tea it's been a long day!
I had a chance to talk to my very good friend who works for Volvo USA, his name will with withheld because he allows me to utilize a VolvoUSA car at autocross tracks and well if I told you who he was I couldn’t "barrow" the car to do stupid stuff! Anyhow Volvo, will be introducing a new line of DTI engines next year. That's Direct Turbo Injection engines. And they have had the same issue we have had with our engines! OMG YOU DON'T SAY! Their solution is apparently "classified" but rumor has it that they were looking into a water misting system? Using the wind shield washer reservoir to at the end of the cycle, when you turn off the car, to give each intake valve a little squirt of water. Now this is only a rumor since well no one has actually come out and said a darn thing yet! But from an engineering point of view, hi I'm a mechanical engineer, this sounds like a very viable solution to a very complex problem. Much easier than foging the top end of your motor. Yes foging the motor does work in removing carbon build up and cleaning up the combustion chambers but the usual take a bottle of Seafoam and hook it up to your vacuum lines no longer works since our vacuum lines have become very wimpy and just can't deal with the chemicals in the Seafoam. Solutions are thusly, Option A as discussed with anyone who knows anything about VW TDI Diesel engines 1) Allow the car to warm up. 2) Find long hill. 3) Place car in gear and floor the crap out of it to redline! 4) Turn around on top of hill if you are not impaled on an oak or an elm or have a woodland creature affixed to your hood. 5) Run the car down the hill while engine breaking. This should help remove a good bit of carbon! Option B, as discussed with some folks who have high spinning motorcycles! 1) Allow the car to warm up. 2) Open air box or air intake of the car. 3) While a friend is depressing the break petal and gunning the engine to 90% of its max rpm spray in a nice mist of WD-40. This will result in a bit of spitting and some good smoke show! And in "theory" will wash away the carbon build up and effectively lubricate your top end without the harsh chemicals associated with Seafoam. Option C, Buy extended warrantee and take it up the pooper wondering WTF is wrong with your car and why it won't work in the snow! |

I find this thread (and the other copy cat one) The 1M's Weakest Link?... is pretty lame. No real facts just people spewing their opinions. I have had enough of it.
