The New Beetle (and wing) averaged 65 mpg on a trip to AK. That NB is a TDI and the owner is an aerodynamicist, IIRC.
So, in this case, that wing actually improved performance. Sure, it might have detracted a bit from the car itself, but it served a purpose. The BMW in question in this post is probably not a joke, it is however, probably owned by folks who are easily influenced by what others thus making their car "better" then their friends. To think that some people actually consider this "cool" and I'm sure their behavior is reinforced by they peers.

I just saw this exact setup on a accord the other day, gold flames, fins, and it even had the same turbo emblem. I was talking with my buddy about who the hell does this to their car and now I see it on a bimmer and I want to slap this person.
