1M setup, what have we learned in a year and a half?

After about a year and a half, what do we know as a group about setup for 1M?

I am going to run through what I have learned while autox the car for a year and then ask you guys that have set the car up for track days on especially the ones that have installed coilovers and camber plates to add to this.
Phase 1
Stock car with on Hoosiers and an alignment

For my 1st few events I ran the car with only a set of A6 Hoosiers 265/295.

The alignment at this point was supposed to be a little toe out in the front and ¼ toe in in the rear but I think I ended up with toe out in the rear too due to the shop not understanding what I was asking for.

I pulled the pins to get about -1.3 for camber in the front.

I had the e93 m3 sway bar on the car at this point

The car turned really well and imo worked better than after adding a ton of go fast parts. There was some body roll and the car would not get off the corner. I ran some low psi in the tires. 39 psi in the front and 31psi in the rear. No issues with tire wear.

Phase 2

I had some Koni d/a with stock spring perches built and installed on the car.
Set the koni’s up 3/12 bound pretty much all the way around and then just off of full soft in the front and about various for rebound in the rear. Car seemed to work better with about 2/3 full stiff for bound in the rear.

Replaced the front sway bar with an h n r sway bar.

Camber was about -1.5
The car ate tires at any psi at this point and understeered bad.

The car has never worked since changing to this setup and the only thing I can come up with is that the there is way too much front sway bar. Matt is running the softer bar e93 m3 bar and his car seems to work.

Phase 3 build

I am going to change out the springs and spring perch to make the coilovers back into coilovers and camber platers on the car with some 18 inch wheels.

I would love to hear from anyone that has built out the car for a coilover with street tire setup that has some track time in the car.

What worked for camber?

Alignment?

Sway bars?

Spring rates?

Tire and wheel setup?

To understand better, have you been auto'xing on stock 19" wheels?
31 psi seems low to me but I haven't auto x'd in years. I always ran high pressures since there was so little time to put heat in them. On track will obviously be very different. 38-40 hot seems ideal.
Just a guess but it sounds like you need to ditch the h&r sway bar and realign.

dan, on the psi in the rear, 31 worked and no wear issues. I got some help from Hoosier tire tester Grady Woods. On the front I played all over the place and ate tires in 20 passes with various psi.

I think the car is over barred for the scca stock rules with the h and r bar.

Car ran on 19 wheels due to scca rules.

I am giving up on the car for scca stock unless rule changes allow for a cheaper tire bill.

right now, I am looking for the folks that have built out the 1m for a track day car on street tires to step forward and talk about their setup.

Mark, It is over for me barring a money tree in the back yard.

I am going to build and run track days with you guys and start back having fun instead of throwing dollar bills out of hte window at the local scca event. I don't really enjoy it like I used to.

Well, FWIW, I enjoyed watching your winning run at nationals, including the cheer at the end. It sure sounded like you were having fun. (Maybe you hadn't looked at the front tires yet.)

I have done some autocrossing because it is closer to home than the track, and cheaper, but next year it will be track days. The track is just so much more fun to me.

I ran pout of money and the go fast parts on the car have slowed it.

I feel i need to complete the build and move to street tires just have the budget to drive the car some.

I spent about 8k and ran about 80 totals passes in the car in 2012. Finishing the build and moving to street tires will probably cost about 2k a year to run the car.

The issue finishing a street tire build and running scca is that there is no street tire class for the car.

That puts the car is ASP with cars that can run a 60 second course 5 to 7 seconds faster.

The fun factor died for me before i won dixie last year. We used to have a group that traveled to the events and this year i have traveled by myself hundreds of miles and thousands of dollars. You just cant justify that kind of money and time off work to drive 6 minutes.

Autox is about people and when you have to win to have fun and stop enjoying the people, it is time to shut it down for a while.

I have a co drive in a street tire mini this year but still have not committed to it in my heart.

Some folks have enjoyed autocrossing the 1M.
http://www.autox4u.com/nnjrlive/results.html

I left the event early as I had to meet clients, so that's why I didn't take the last three runs.

I couldn't be happier than with my current set-up -- JRZ RS1 dampers, Swift springs, E93 front sway. Can't recall rates at top of my head, but I've posted them in previous threads.

I also broke-in a set of BFG R1 tires this weekend at Summit Point on a new set of Apex wheels (10" front, 10 1/2" rear). Tires are 265/35-18 and 285/30-18.

Plenty of room for more rubber in back, but fronts are as large as I can go without running a spacer as I have maybe 3-4mm between tire and strut.

285/30/18 BF Goodrich R1 fits just great up front on my ET25 18 x 10 wheels without a spacer

I believe that mine have the same offset (et 25) and I can't imagine fitting 20mm wider rubber!

Perhaps the lower profile (30 vs. 35) makes enough of a difference, but I'm already damn close to rubbing on the strut.

35 to 30 in 285 width makes a difference of 1.1 or 1.2" in tallness (overall diameter) so like Mark said shouldn't be a problem at all to fit the same tire on front as well.

The R1 only is available in 285/30.

And the difference in diameter between the 265/35-18 and 285/30-18 is only 0.1", so perhaps the 285/30 would fit...

i have a square setup. 18 x 10 with 285/30 all around for BFG. they stick out of the fenders just a tick more than a 275/35 Hoosier/Continental which also fit just fine.

I have also fit a 285/30/18 hankook RS-3 and may mount those all around next for autocross.. ... I kinda wussed out with the 265/35s the first time around... fender liner, shmender liner right?

If you have the energy to chase cones in the TX heat you certainly can change out fender liners in the comfort of your garage. Just sayin...
