what got me confused was the main discussion on this thread tend to go toward saltwater. Then someone mentioned cichlids and I thought they also talk about saltwater cichlids. Being that I do not know much about saltwater then what I learned here, I thought cichlids were also found in saltwater.

I just have to share my new fishy, a wrasse, we just got.

He is sooo pretty and the really neat thing about him is that he hides in the sand when he is scared and when he sleeps at night, so you can't see him at all. I thought that was really cool.

Here is a picture of him, and another picture showing all four of our fish (the angel fish is kind of hiding behind the wrasse).

I think that he is probably the most beautiful fish i have ever seen for under $100. He was $26. for reference, the Blue Hippo Tang was $36, the Maroon Clownfish was $19, and the Coral Beauty Pygmy Angel was $32.

I currently have a 30 gal. freshwater tank of cichlid fish.

I would really like a smaller tank (maybe 15 gal) with saltwater fish. I think tropical fish just look stunning.

What kind of equipment would I need for a saltwater tank?

Tank
Stand
Filter -- is there a special type for saltwater fish?
Special water?
Special salt?
Heater
Air bubble thing

Anything else??

I recommend the Nano 6g,12g, or 24g dual light tank. They have ones that come in a kit with almost everything you need to start up. The filtration system is built into the back of the tank on the Nano cubes. You need a shelf/desk/counter/stand to put it on. You need live sand, live rock, chemicals, saltwater(found at a local fish store-not Petsmart of PetCo), snails, hermit crabs, and probably a sand sifting starfish and a cleaner shrimp. If you want, then you need fish and corals.

Oh great! That's exactly what I need. A nice lil kit. Thanks.

Does Nano have a website?

They have the 12g deluxe kit for $150 but you can find them new on eBay for half that price.

I don't know lol. It's either a juvenile male or it's a female. The adult males look like the attached fishy below.

Btw, my boyfriend arranged the rocks in the tank to make a pretty arch again.

I hated when you go to the fish store and the the owner tells you this is a male and this is a female fish so you can breed but the owner really does not know for sure and just trying to get you to buy a pair. That is bad business.

yeah sometimes it is really hard to tell, but i'm sure that sometimes the people at the store just don't really care to look hard enough.

Nikki, when will you dive into the SPS mode of your reef tank?
Jeez, I have been wanting to post a reply on this topic, but I have waited until I dug out all my past lit. I used to be a contributing writer in a magazine called "Marine Fish Monthly" I am going to post some pics of my reef tank as soon as I take some good ones...Get ready for the SPS display of your life. Acropora heaven!!

Thanks, yes it is reef safe. You can't buy anything that is not reef safe in such a small tank because it would eat away all of the coral in no time.

maybe when we upgrade our lighting, so like $300-$500 down the road haha. i believe they require briht lighting and are very delicate, right?

Thumbs up

Yes, they do need "bright" lights...sps's are funny little boogers...If you get maricultured animals they will be more tolerant to wider variations in light as to wild harvested ones...Metal Halide is the only way to go for clams and sps's. A calcium reactor is an absolute must also. Yes they tend to be a little more fussy to water conditions, but, a calcium reactor solves allot of those issues and a good protein skimmer is a must. ( I do 10 gal water changes in my 300 gal every month or two!!!!! If that will tell you something)
For lighting, Degree spectrum is somewhat important too...Anything in the 10k range or higher is going to bring out the blues and reds in your sps's, but they wont grow as fast, they may look a little better (more colorful) where if you go with a lower (6500 Iwasaki) the corals will grow like weeds and tend to be healthier. But these bulbs tend to be a little green yellow in color and your corals aren't as vibrant in display color. Some has to do where they were harvested...deeper water...shallow water...different light spec's. When you add them to your tank, they may change to a completely different color...Jeez, I'm carrying on again...Please, if you have any questions for me, I would love to help I have over 15 years of salt water time, and have access to all of the people you read about in magazines...

I am at the office now...I'll get some pics posted when I get home
