Can I tune my 135i safely with out the OEM oil cooler?

Hey All,
I just found out because I don't have the sport pacakge I also don't have the oil cooler that comes with all 135i's with the sport package, therefore I'm wondering what tune I can do with out this oil cooler or if i'll have to buy an after market oil cooler or one from BMW or Dinan. Any thoughts?

I believe all of the 135s came with the cooler. It was only some of the early non-sport auto 335s that didn't. Look under your RF fender, in front of the tire.

Ummmmm..... not on the 'Verts! I thought on the '08 verts w/o sport they do not have an oil cooler. Later in '09 is hwen all the cars got them.

But now for 2011's IF you don't "tick" the sport option.... you don't get an oil cooler. Progress? I think NOT!

But it is best to look in the fender area and at the oild filter housing for the two black hoses going down over to the pass fender area.

I had turner motorsport in amesbury look under the wheel well and in the other very obviously place in the middle of the engine up front and high on the engine cover. big silver thing and I don't have one in either place according to them, I drive an 08 vert w/o sport package. take it from me I don't have one. believe me I'm bummed about it becuase I'm under the impression I can not tune wiht out this or at least safely with out this. I'd rather not tune and drive my car 200k vs blow my engine or turbos at 50k, I did that with my A4 stage 2 and don't want it to happen again. I would tune if I could get warranty ie dinan or PPK but it appears I can't do either. I guess it's 300/300 for me, oh well still fast. I told my friend how much horse power we have and almost shit himself. he drives a 02 porsche c2 cab good enough for him good enough for me.

They run pretty damn hot stock, even with the oil cooler. I would not tune without one.

I've got an '08 'vert and no sport package. I don't have the oil cooler either. It takes a good 15 minutes or so of driving for the oil temp to even register. Normal operating temps for me vary between 220 and 250 degrees, even when I've driven the car at 8/10 on hilly (empty) back roads in warm weather.

I'd still recommend getting an aftermarket OC if you plan on doing any performance mods, regardless of the tuner. What do others have?

+1, imo go dinan or OE retrofit whether you tune or not.

Id be more concerned with longevity of the trans accepting higher torque.

with the Dinan Tune and just cruising on hot day I can hit 250 without much trouble... That's why I'm upgrading to the Dinan Oil Cooler, def get one if you don't have one for some reason, and if you do you should probably get a bigger one.

I think this depends on what you want to do with the car after it's tuned. If you're just going to use it for blasts up an on ramp, or a drive that lasts a few minutes down a country road, you'll be fine.

If you're planning on tracking the car, or doing something else with it that will mean being at WOT for extended periods, the oil cooler is a must.

You've got an oil temp gauge, and you're aware that it could be a problem, so I'd put the tune on the car and see how it reacts. If you're seeing the temp move past the 250 degree mark when you're pushing the car, a retrofit is probably in order if you're going to continue to use the tune on a regular basis.

no tracking for me, I have a convertible and I"m pretty sure they don't allow verts on tracks, here's what the dinan rep said when I asked him if I can tune my car w/o the OC

"First we would need to know a few more details about your car:

- What is the production date?

- Is it MSD80 or MSD81?

If it is MSD81 we would need to send it out to program (or there is a possibility we could program it online)

Also, your car may have an oil cooler even though it is not a sport package. Did you physically see that the oil cooler is not there? We haven’t seen any 135i convertibles without oil coolers."
