JB3 limp mode :(
yesterday i was merging onto the freeway going about 50 in 4th gear, i proceded to give it some gas and when it got to aroun 3200 rpms, the engine bogged out and the whole car shook with a check engine light appearing on the dash. I pulled over, restarted the car on map 0 instead of map 5, which i was running when the incedent happened. The car started up fine with no check engine light or SES light. I proceded to drive home only to find out that even on stock mode, around 65 mph the car began to studder A LOT and would bog down throwing the light again. I removed my JB3 and scanned the car for codes, these were the codes that were thrown:
2AAF: 2AAF Fuel pump, plausibility Error will not cause a warning light Error is not currently present Test conditions have been completed Short circuit or signal interruption Freeze Frame Information Event 1Odometer 1176kms 730miles fuel pressure before mass control valve 0.00 hPa Engine speed 0.00 rpm voltage Kl. 87 0.00 V injected mass of fuel 0.00 l/h Event 2Odometer 1248kms 775miles fuel pressure before mass control valve 4,924.64 hPa Engine speed 2,784.00 rpm voltage Kl. 87 14.02 V injected mass of fuel 0.00 l/h Event 3Odometer 1736kms 1078miles fuel pressure before mass control valve 5,561.44 hPa Engine speed 3,840.00 rpm voltage Kl. 87 14.02 V injected mass of fuel 0.00 l/h 2D18: 2D18 manipulation cover, maximum air mass Error will not cause a warning light Error is not currently present Test conditions have been completed Short circuit or signal interruption 2FBF: 2FBF Fuel pressure at injection release Error will not cause a warning light Error is not currently present Test conditions have been completed Short circuit or signal interruption Freeze Frame Information Event 1Odometer 2176kms 1352miles rail pressure 6,792.59 hPa PWM-Signal of mass control valve 62.11 % voltage Kl. 87 11.07 V fuel pressure before mass control valve 5,476.53 hPa 29DC: 29DC Cylinder injection switch-off Error will cause a warning light Error is not currently present Test conditions have been completed Short circuit or signal interruption Freeze Frame Information Event 1Odometer 2424kms 1506miles Engine temperature 103.50 °C air mass calculated 824.73 mg/stk Engine speed 3,168.00 rpm fuel tank filling level 31.00 l I cleared all the codes afterwards, took it for one more drive, was able to throw the same codes without the jb3 connected, then i drove the car to the BMW dealership and now I'm awaiting to hear what the problem is. Does anyone think they have an idea as to what is going on? has anyone ever experienced this problem with their JB3? or maybe just their car in general? |

yeah i looked at two of those codes and found that both are signs of a dying fuel pump, its pretty amazing to me as i've only driven the car a total of 1500 miles

Take the JB3 out, don't clear the fuel pump codes and take it to the dealer. With those codes they have reason to give you a new pump. Good luck!
Edit: I see you've already taken it in...Hope it works out.

You should probably change the title of the thread. This has nothing to do with the JB3 and everything to do with our friendly HPFP. Good luck man.

They will probably do a software upgrade, let us know what it feels like afterward. What dealer in NorCal is it?

I had this same issue last week and they put in a new 943 HPFP and new software. I first had issues several months ago when I had about 2000 miles on it and mine was replaced at 3,600 miles. The car functions the same as prior with no fuel pump issues. No noticeable lack of performance or no noticeable lag increase. Performs as it should. I just hope to maintain reliability now and I would be happy.
My dealer was great handling this issue. As soon as the SES light came on I called my SA and they immediately took it in. I limped it to the dealer by short shifting it, since it would bog down at revs much more than 3k. They had a 2009 Z4 hard top vert waiting for me. I had my 135i back in two working days. |

I got the car back yesterday and did quite a bit of driving on it. There were no new noticeable differences in power, the only differences i noticed was that it took my lights 5 seconds longer to come on when i hit the unlock button on my key, and that the stereo does sound better now. I put the JB3 back in because i couldn't stand having stock power for more than an hour
as for my build date, it is a January 2010 build |

Dmacc, did you leave the Mass air flow code showing when you took it in? I was told that is a tuner code.
Also, did the dealer ask or imply you had tuned the car? One more thing, the pump you got is a new pump correct? If so, did dealer mention any problems with it so far? Glad to hear everthing was fixed ok! |

Yes, that code is a tuner code and needs to be cleared before you go in to the dealer, the dealer did not imply to me that i had tuned my car at all because i had taken the jb3 out and deleted all codes. And as far as the new pump, they said they've had problems, but definitely not as many as they did with the other pump. So even though the pump isn't 100% perfect, its a huge improvement over the old one. |
