2A82 Inlet VANOS error code

Recently, my 135 throwed 2A82 (Inlet VANOS variable CAM control) error code once every 2-3 hundreds miles around 3-4,000 rpm.

I know the first thing to do is to replace the intake VANOS solenoid.

However, my real question is ... Do I need to get this fix ASAP before I take my car to the emission inspection since it is due within the next 4 weeks?

Or can I drive the car easy such that the error code won't pop up again and just to get the car into readyness mode for the emission inspection.

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you drive it easy you won't trigger the VANOS code. Also you can pull out the VANOS and give it a good clean, it might buy you some more time - up to 6 months depending on how bad it is.

This is what I am going to do, pass the emission first then take care of the VANOS problem later. Thanks

FYI the vanos solenoid replacement is roughly $100-$120 anyway so it's fairly inexpensive.

It only takes a matter of minutes with then engine cover removed. The time-consuming part is removing the cowl and engine cover.

I would replaced both vanos solenoids and do a oil change. I cant count how many we have done at the shop in the past 2+ years. pretty common. If the faults return after both solenoids have been replaced per a BMW SIB you will then need to remove the valve cover and the cam to check if there's any signs bearing ledge wear ! I can personal say I have only seen that twice since this motor came out.

I've already ordered the solenoid, but I wanted to pass the emission first such that I don't have to work under pressure against time. Thanks to all your input.

Just wanted to report back, I drove the car easy without trigerring the VANOS error code and got my car passed the emission today!!!

Next is to replace the VANOS solenoid and check if the error code come back again or not. If the fix did not get ride of the problem, I am considering trade in my 135 for something more reliable since I do not want to spend couple thousand dollars to open up the cylinder head to replace the sledge.

That's good mate. Replacing your solenoid will fix the issue, I'm sure of it. Vanos is a fairly common problem and fortunately a simple and cheap fix. Keep enjoying the 135i

I'm going on a year after cleaning mine with no problems, its not a big deal more a maintenance item. I plan on cleaning them every 3 oil changes on both my Bimmers. I was amazed at how much better my X3 drove after cleaning the solenoid, night and day!

Make sure you replace you cam sensor " located behind intake manifold" i replaced my intake and exhaust solenoid and a couple weeks later i walnut blasted my car, after that it would crank on start and go the cam sensor replaced and car was fine after that. a bmw technician said usually the cam sensor goes bad after you replace your solenoids

I was getting errors on the exhaust side. I just pull it and cleaned it. Have not seen any codes again.
