In any case, the cost of iDrive is non-trivial, so of course it's going to be a major factor in the decision process. But it's not about being able to afford it or not, but whether or not the buyer sees perceived value in the purchase. For me, $2150 (basic iDrive) + $750 (the cost of Bluetooth at the time I bought, needed for full functionality) = $2900, or really not worth it when I picked up a Garmin for >$200 and the iPod connectivity for ~$300 (yes, I easily navigate a 60GB music library w/o iDrive). These days, Bluetooth is "only" $650, but you have BMW Apps for $250, so full functionality will cost you $3050. So while I'm sure it's cool to have all that stuff, to me, at the end of the day, it wasn't $3,000 cool. On top of that, I genuinely don't like the look of it in the car. It looks sort of shoehorned into the cabin and disrupts the otherwise simple design, and as someone else mentioned, I don't want to be looking at a computer screen the whole time I'm driving, especially at night (a pop-up screen would've been a plus, but probably still wouldn't have swayed me). Finally, judging by the one new 5 Series I had as a loaner, I didn't find the UI to be all that good. Certainly adequate, but not worth the premium BMW is charging.

I can't argue with opinions on the look of it but my wife and I both agreed immediately upon sitting in a 335 with idrive that the double binnacle design on the dash of that car is, quite frankly, the ugliest thing in any BMW. It has so many curved overhangs, it looks like the hobbit shire.

I love the hobbit comparison too.
I don't want to clog this up talking about Garmins but the BMW Pro system works like mine and you can just disengage the GPS from the mount and take it with you if you are worried about theft. Mine is rarely parked where I am worried (normally it is in my garage or at work (you can't get to the parking lot at work without a badge and it is monitored (including with cameras)). But if I am worried I just snap it out. When I play MP3s, the music player screen shows the album art. I usually switch back to the GPS display, however, so I can get an accurate speed indication. I agree theft if a risk but I think it might be a little less when the mount is part of the car - if they stole my Garmin they should have difficulty selling it because they wouldn't have a mount or power cord. I posted these first two comparison shots elsewhere. Now, I think I was being unfair. I think the older Buick (third photo), where they didn't try to disrupt the flat, rectangular, motif, may have been the best of the three.

I guess there are enough opinions here already, but add me to the list of haters. I tried as long as I could in the dealership to find anything in iDrive I wanted, and I try again every time I have a loaner, but no, I hate it. I have a little $50 Garmin navigator that I prefer to the BMW one. I have a little $10 USB stick for music. When I need to reset my clock or TPMS or whatever, the stalk controls are fine. Honestly, I wouldn't take iDrive for free. I need the cupholders, and there's no way I'd use that ridiculous retro cupholder thing.

I think this looks better than all of those...

LOL, the only option that I did not want on my 135 was idrive. I intentionally set out to find one without that option.

I hate to be a Debby downer, but here is my take.
Consider repair (rape?) costs of an iDrive esp when buying a used or out of warranty car. Even CPO warranty does not cover iDrive - see how BMW values their own hardware? I had my iDrive repaired AND replaced on 2009 535xiT 1. DVD drive failed while under warranty - not too bad. About $600 to replace at indy shop. WTF? 2. 6 month later after warranty expired, CCC unit (iDrive) died - $1500 to replace that POS. That's a price of MacBook pro right there... I don't really need iDrive, but since the car already has it, it can't go without it. e.g I can adjust all the music settings, I can't switch to a radio or use my phone via BT, hell, I cant even switch from AC to heat mode! IMO iDrive only subtracts from reliability rating of these cars and adds to an owner's expense. |

idrive is not even close to mandatory. I just bought a little garmin for like $100. Screw a $2000 option.
