BMW Performance Air Intake Filter

So this is what I received for a filter with my, supposedly US, BMW Performance Intake.

[IMG][/IMG]

I've been searching for this part number on the web with no luck. I finally contacted K&N customer service and this was their response.

"Hello John,

The filter you have is something we build special for a company by the name of Red Arch Manufacturing. They have the rights to the product so you will need to get in contact with them for any questions or issues as they send us the specs they want built and we build it and it goes right back to them. They are responsible for the designed and how it works and tested.

Thank you,

Jessica Roberts
Product Specialist
K&N Engineering, Inc.
Phone: (800) 858-3333 Fax: (951) 826-4001
"

Is it possible that I got the Euro version of this air filter? This Red Arch company is in England. Is there a dry element that I could swap this out with AFE or other?

I didn't really want an oiled filter but I received one anyways.

Do you have a picture of the filter itself?

This goes back to what I was saying about the Euro getting the oiled.

New Performance filter/box on left, stock filter/box middle, carbon filter on the right.

Well, that's definitely not the Euro filter.

Perhaps they just changed the design at some point. Why not just use the stock filter?

Maybe I'm not understanding this thread correctly, but I don't see what the issue is. The US version of the Performance intake includes a panel-style filter just like the stock version, but it is a K&N style oiled filter; in fact, by the labeling it appears it IS a K&N filter.

So what's the problem?

I believe he thinks it should have come with a dry.

If I wanted a K&N filter I would have bought a panel filter for $50 and saved myself $750.

I've had K&N filters before but I'm somewhat leery about the particles they allow through and the damage to the engine over time, and I'm not wild about having oil near the MAF, although again I've never had an issue. I was hoping for an AFE pro performance style panel filter or something similar. I'm planning to have this car for a minimum of 5 years.

The BMW Performance Intake is:

-Larger Induction scoops/tunnels behind the grille
-Larger top to air box with larger opening
-A small 3rd intake near the top of the fender, some people also claim this to add a intake noise effect.
-K&N drop in filter.

Plus you get OEM fitment.

It is not just a $750.00 drop in filter..

Dremel out that carbon filter and sand it smooth. It is only going to get dirty and hurt air flow.

I installed the intake myself so I get that it isn't just the filter element. The carbon fiber alone almost made it worth the price. I guess what I'm saying is that I had ruled out the K&N filter, but received one anyways. I guess not a huge deal.

The carbon filter is long gone. Some Dremel tooling and sanding and into the trash. : )

You can always just change. I just order Euro filters which are K&N built to BMW specs(much like yours). I wouldn't worry about who makes it as much as I would worry about OE/non-oiled.

Your filter for the euro performance box is K&N and it's not oiled? I'm trying to justify buying the dry aFe cone filter for the eurobox because it's impossible to find the K&N dry filters.

So the USA/NA Perf intake filter is oiled. Well that changes things, I always thought it was dry. My bad.

I also recall you said u even used the dry paper OEM filter.

Stig have you seen the euro BMW Perf round filter? Is it oiled or dry? Baby BMW forums claim its dry...

I have the AFE round Dry filter, washed it once so far and vacum it anytime i can. I can see this filter lasting a good 2 years before needing a refresh. The best price into Canada was from amazon.com's own warehouse and their calculator predicted all the customs fees.

Also the box it comes in is a nice square box perfect for a garage self to hold misc stuff.

The BMW Performance filter that came with my Euro intake was oiled. It ended up in the trash pretty fast.

Unreal.
So the dry versions are OEM round paper and AFE round dry. Same for NA filter, OEM, AFE dry and soon GreenFilter dry from AA

What about BMC, are their filters in general oiled?

Yup, the one on the left looks exactly like what I threw out, while the one on the right looks like what I used.

hmmn, so i guess bmw cleans their performance filters then during service intervals, strange i thought they would just replace them in service intervals.
confused between this performance air filter & the pipercross :roll eyes:

Just use OE dry. The hassle of oiled is not worth the .1hp you might gain.

And I'm sure BMW replaces the oiled filter and does not clean it.

Correction, .001hp.

But I think the oil approach in this thread is a bit unreasonable. It would take A LOT of oil to mess the MAF up. From the box, it's good to go. Just be sensible when re-oiling down the road.

I've re-oiled mine a few times now with zero issues.
