I really don't like the constant ‘mines better’ mentality of this forum. I've never understood why guys have to make it such a big deal. The 135 is an awesome car. The m3 is awesome car. Same goes for 1m.

What you write here is anything but objective though. Of course a modded 135 will be faster than a 1m and m3. That's the entire point of modding it. I've never heard of someone modding their car to make it slower. By the same token a Maita can absolutely annihilate all three of these cars. I'm talking take 5 seconds off the best lap time listed. It will be a bit 'modded' of course..

^ hopefully you read the previous post. I wasn't saying my car is better I was offering the results many have wondered and hoped for, a head to head comparison with the same pro driver on the same track. the previous comment that the 1M and the 135 are very different is a very silly statement. different, yes. very different, no. btw, my engine is stock. just suspension mods!

don't get me wrong if the 1M was available when I bought my car I would have def gone for it but would I notice a big difference in performance, guess I already answered that.

This guys speaks the truth!

I would of held on to my 135i if the 1M never existed.

This argument was triggered by an ignorant statement, but let me remind you guys, this thread is not about 135i vs 1M,ect. Out of respect to OP, who wrote a great article, i would suggest everyone to get back on topic

Sure take the high road NOW. The way I see it it's your statement that 'started' it all down the OT rabbit hole.

Remember?

Exactly, I just stated my opinion that they are not very similar. I've driven both, you haven't.

Gosh, I've read all these posts and I'm pretty sure no one said any car is "bad" or "better". But pretty much everyone said these cars are "different". The bottomline is they are all great BMW's. No doubt you can make a 135 faster then a stock 1M or M3 but who really cares? If you want the faster car, your only held back by the amount of money you have/spend. Have at it guys! I for one loved my 135 and all my M3's. The 1M is just the newest toy available, so I got one. Can you beat me on the track with whatever you drive? Maybe, but I don't want to take my 1M , or any car for that matter, home in pieces.

Buy what you like, like what you drive and have fun. It's not a c%ck measuring contest!

Iron Man-
Human man with lots of high tech gadgets to get the job done.

Superman-
Non human with nearly no gadgets, just pure visceral power to get the job done.

Good write up, good read.

Just a different take.
But, I don't own either car, so don't mind me.

James, This is a fantastic review, thanks for taking the time to post it.

Now I just have to take one for a spin and see for myself.

When I get my 1M it will be my DD but I will keep the E46 too as my "beater".

Can you write about your feelings re: 1M vs E46 M3?
I also notice that you mention you had owned a E46 M3 before. Can you input a little between the two car as I would like your opinion also. Thanks.

Anyone who says the 135i and the 1M are not extremely different, clearly hasn't driven both. Your argument on similarities can't be based on paper, and driving doesn't happen on paper.

The driving experience is completely different. It's that 'je ne said quoi' that all M cars have that always makes them come out on top of the reviews after having lost in every category.

And anyways, this thread is about a man who is comparing his last car to this one. How you even brought the 135i in here is beyond me. Stay on topic of GTFO!

Great write-up, James! I've driven both and agree with you. I'm splitting it down the middle and getting an e92 M3 with 6sp though.

I have driven them all and the e90 was just too big and the seating was bad, IMO. The e36 is still the fastest of the 3 in street tire autocross trim.

The 1m has not been announced to run in stu, but it probably will and it will be faster once built than e36.

As for track cars, I have no idea. I would think the e90 would me the fastest out of the 5 m cars on a track.
I strongly doubt that the 1M would be faster than an E36 M3 in STU. I have driven an E36 M3 (mine) and a 135i (my co-driver's) prepared for STU. In my testing, the 135i was usually 1.5+ seconds slower on a 60 second course. I have also driven a stock 1M. In a street tire class weight is one, if not the most, important performance indicator. Look at some of the results - the ST Civics beat STU at many events. The 1M weighs significantly more and the non-linear power delivery of a 135i or 1M is a real problem. If the cpu didn't cut boost when left foot braking it might be a different story.

This man knows what he's talking about.

I seriously doubt that the 1M could beat an E30 318i because once my sister lost a drag race to one in her 128 'vert.

This makes me an expert on the matter.
