Pretty sure he means having to start with the clutch depressed. As far as I know, there's no way to override this.

Why would you want it de acctivated mate..?
Most new cars have this now as a safety feature. If your car was an Auto BMW, you would have to start it with the brake pedal depressed... Same type of safety feature. |

Sometimes i just want to reach in and start the car to get it a bit warmed up say 1 - 2 min before im off to work to get the heater working (Canberra!!) or to get it up to or closer to 'flogging' temp early er cause Im only 10-12 min from work and feel a bit more comfortable doing that when the engine is a bit warmer.
Its not a big issue more of a conveniance factor I spose. Sometime I do this ritual with hands full eg bringing the garbage out... Would be nice just to reach in and turn on the car and keep going. Not life threatening, if it can't be done so be it. |

To warm up on cold mornings I've managed to perfect the art to standing outside the car, putting one foot on the brake (auto) and sticking the key in the dash and pressing start by reach through the wheel.
Not pretty but only way to start the car without getting in. Crazy part is a few MBs I've driven have a similar auto starting feature that don't require any pedals to be pressed. Just turn the key fully and walk away.

Yep 135, 15 minutes of steady driving at 20 degrees C the temp needle would have barely started moving. Probably take more than 1/2 hour on a cold Canberra morning.

Starting with your clutch depressed isn't a bad idea anyway - takes the weight of the transmission off the starter motor...
On older cars with an already heavy flywheel it can make a lot of difference. I'm guessing less important with our 135s though.

For me, if I don't depress clutch when shutting down I get an odd noise like something's loose in the engine.

In the morning about 5 min from here there is decent bit of road to give it a 'hit', my bit of fun on the way to work. I do a bit of WOT up to about 5000 rpm's give or take and it gets bloody cold some mornings (-4 and colder sometimes) so I like to warm it up. Also its nice to get into a car with the heater heating (must say the heater works really well from dead cold. Super quick). That and about 4-5lt too small a fuel tank is about my only (small) gripe. As I said, not life threatening. Best value car ever in my books. Yep. |

I'm with you yep... it'd be nice to just be able to reach in and start the car without having to get in, depress clutch and start... don't think it's going to happen though
I haven't been holding the clutch in when I turn the car off though... does anyone know if this is required? |

Thats the input shaft on the transmission, my old 3 series had it too. the 1er has it also. The manual recommends you depress the clutch when shutting the engine down.. you can also hear the input shaft when you reverse or when your taking off slowly...
