New owner, questions regarding bluetooth and USB audio

I've searched the forums and done a lot of reading but I'm still confused as to whether or not I need to buy a Y adapter. My car is a 2011 135 with HK and navigation. I plug my iphone 6 into it and the USB icon on my idrive says "Not Supported", how can I determine what firmware or model my idrive system is? I know on other cars you simply go to settings and options and it'll tell you, I don't see any of that on my car. I've copied and pasted my vin decoder info below, any help is greatly appreciated.

You need the Y-cable. The normal USB cable won't work on any 1-series from factory, but it is possible to do some modifications to make it work.

This is not completely correct.

The standard iPhone cable does indeed work on the newer model 1ers. My MY2010 135i needed the Y-Cable. My MY2012 1M does not.

Can you please specify what modifications need to be done to make it work? I saw the thread on retrofitting a holster for the phone but the holster just has a lightning bolt wire sticking out of it.

Hm, I've never heard of that. I know that it's possible on Minis, but I've not seen it in an 1-series. The 6FL needs Y-cable, while the 6NF normally uses the docking in the armrest.

It seems like your car is two months to old to do this the easy the easy way. You need a combox to be able to do this.
