M Sport Square Tire Setup

My original sizes are:

205/50-17 Front
225/45-17 Rear

Is there any reason that I could not put a square setup on this vehicle with (4) 225/45-17's?

Depends on the tire, but most would be okay.

Find the specific tire you want or love, then check tirerack for the manufacturer's recommended wheel width size.

Using the Michelin PSS as an example, they recommend a range of 7-8.5" wheel width for that tire size.

Aesthetically, you won't notice much of a difference, but your fronts will be more "meatier" looking than the rears.

Just keep in mind you won't be able to rotate these down the road.

I run a 235 square setup on my car. Does a good job of neutralizing factory understeer.

Why would he not be able to rotate?

My bad. The implication by tire size is that he has the standard M-Sport rims. 205/50 and 225/45.

I thought the M Sport wheels are 18" 7.5" width on the front and 8.5" on the rear.

128i stock rim sizes are 17x7 front and 17x7.5 rear with a 47mm offset on both if I understand correctly. The question is: Will a 17x8.5inch rim, or even 17x8 fit on the front, and the recommended tire size width (according to TireRack is the same same as stock - 205). Wouldn't this size on a wider rim look majorly stretched?

The Canadian 128i w/Sport Pak. comes with 18" #263 wheels,215 on 7 1/2 in front and 245 on 8 1/2 in rear. Runflats are just about done so I think I'll try a square setup, probably 225/40/18.

I had the same exact question when shopping for winters, and received some excellent advice from people on this message board.

1. I have the OEM 7 front, 7.5 rear rim set-up just like you.

2. I purchased Michelin Ice-X3s in 225/17s all around/square set-up.

3. They fit terrifically.

4. Go to the TireRack.com page, search for type of tire that you want and click on the "Specs" tab. It will show you a rim-width range for the tire you're interested in.

It's a great website to do tire research on, and a great place to do business with.

Good luck!

225/45/17 should work front and rear.

I don't know for you but this year I have a lot of troubles to find performance tires in 205/17/50, it was discontinued by Dunlop for the 3D and I cannot find their new 4D in that size. I find the rear 225/17/45 without any problem but not my front ones

+1 albeit run 225-45-17 squared. Thats what my winter setup is. With stock rims the tires will be fine also.
