Running In Service (Early!)

Bought my car in July (production date was Mid June). So far in two months i've done around 800 miles. Last weekend my service indicator flagged up in RED (previously was amber). Having checked iDrive, it advised that i needed to perform an oil change albeit oil level was OK. This seems to work on date as opposed to mileage.

Called the dealer and they have advised that i bring the car in early for its 1200 service so hence its being done at 800 miles..??

Has anybody else found themselves in this position as i have been told the car no longer needs to go in at 1200 miles now if its being done at 800!

I also had the same situation with mine. I've had mine since the end of May and at around 700 miles the service indicator flashed up red advising I needed the engine oil changed. My dealer advised me to bring it in so they could have a look at it but advised they could not do the running in service as it was too early and to keep driving it as I would usually until the 1200 miles. I did this and all is ok they did say they think the factory settings were set wrong when built, but who knows!!

+1 mine was done after 1500 km instead of 2000 km. Don't worry

Don't think its dependent on how you drive as i've been taking it really easy. 99% of the time the car is on the motorway and I've been driving so easy infact that i average 29.6 mpg on motorway runs!!

I hardly drive the car and based on current figures i'm on par to do less then 5K miles this year. If your doing an average of 10K miles per annum you'd easily hit the 1200 miles service schedule within within two months of getting the car. Apparently the initial oil change is date based and set to flag within three months of the car being produced, or atleast this is what i was told by the dealership.

You guys might try and acess the instrument pannel (BC) hidden menu.. in screen four you can see the actual build date of your car. Then you guys will know IF this 1M first service is base on time or not. I suspect it is.

I don't think I would do the 1M first service early. I would wait until 1,200 miles.

DIY How to read your (instrument pannel)software version.

I was told it is also time dependant from date of PDI inspection not manufacture. Mine was built in June, PDI shortly after, stored till last week and service indicator says its required even though car had done 15miles.

So its not how you drive it. Its either by date PDI/manufacture, or by mileage! Which ever comes first!

Yep, happened to me too, mine went Red at 600klms (400mls) was told that the 1st service indicator for 1M's was 2000klms (1200mls) or 3 months from build date which ever came first. Was told by BMW Chief Service guy to keep driving it until 2000klms then book the service.

Interesting thread.

However it does pose the question "why have the service?". I thought the whole point of the service was to allow the engine and other components to bed in, hence the reason for not exceeding 4500rpm. However if its time dependant, then what is the service achieving if it's done after, say 15 miles?!?! Nothing would have bedded in so the dealer is doing a service based on what the car is telling them.

I don't get the point of the service now, unless someone more technical can spread some light on this?

Not sure Chris, but you make a good point. The whole point is to have the engine bed in so why do it early?? So mine is now being done at 820 miles.

Nonetheless i dropped it off this morning hoping that it would be a "while you wait" service as i was told it would be. Only to then find out that the diff oil they need is not available - i kinda saw that coming!

So they plonked me into a new 61 plate 530 touring - rather nice motor even if it is an oil burner. Its got some real grunt! And the new parking camera is awesome!!

At least they didn't put a substitute oil in just to get rid of you and the car.

My service is due in 50kms according to my car, although I'm only at 1400kms (service is supposed to be at 2000kms).
I asked my dealer about this and they said to keep driving until I hit 2000kms and then go in for the service, so I should disregard my car's computer.
They also said something that intrigued me, they said the car is in a sort of "transportation mode" which they are going to supposedly turn off during the first service. They said that by doing this the car "wakes up" and it's full functionality is achieved. The sales rep that told me this is a straightshooter so he is not the sort to bullshit around, and he said the chief service engineer of the dealership told him that. Anyone heard anything about this??

I've never heard of a "transportation mode" and I'm not even sure what they can switch back on. However if this is the case I'd be interested if someone can shed some light on it.

My car has covered 400 miles and the red service light has come on today. It was only pdi'd about 2 weeks ago. I will have to phone the dealer on Monday to see what they say.

Transport is a mode before PDI that the car leaves the factory in. It limits revs to something low and limits speed to 15 odd mph. Shouldn't reach customer like that.

My dealer did say that the car isn't in full tune initially, until after the first service though. My car does feel a little sluggish in lower revs but it's only done 600 miles so far.

Anyone able verify that?

Can't imagine that your car is in transport mode? That normally limits RPMs to 1500-2000, so it would feel totally gutless.

I don't know how many of these "first service" threads we must have! It has been brought up time and time before - that the first service is based SOLEY on time, 90 days after the car was built. Not miles/kilometers driven, nor how hard you drive.

For all of you guys with an early warning(lamp/flag) to have the service done(early)... I think I would wait until you cover 1,200 miles or 2,000 kms.

+ 1, wait for 1200 miles. This is the point of the break in to get some miles on the drive train.
