Interesting thread. I live in London, received my 1M a couple of months ago and travel quite a lot too (incl HK/Sing/oz coincidentally!).
I've been offered just under list price by a main BMW dealer who wants to take my car in for stock, and began to ask myself the same question. I don't think these cars are necessarily going to appreciate in value (vs original list price). I had an immaculate e46 CSL which I sold to buy the 1M. The CSL is incredibly special but even then, my low mileage 2-owner car sold for around 50% of it's original list price. That said, I think there is a real possibility that the next generation cars (M2/4/1/etc) may only be offered with the double clutch auto transmissions. If that's the case, the 1M becomes one of the last m-cars with a real manual/stick transmission, which should make it extra special. Anyway, for many of the reasons in Dee Pee's post above, I decided I will keep the 1M rather than take the strong dealer bid. I usually get bored with cars pretty quickly but there is something about the 1M that makes it very special, particularly the combination of understated looks and hair raising performance. Probably a case of heart ruling head, but it put it in the same camp as my 993 - one of those once-in-decade iconic cars that puts a smile on your face at night, just knowing it's parked in your garage. Dee Pee: much respect to the batmobile. I've been looking for an S54 ZM-Coupe for two years. Almost bought an immaculate 17k miles 2002 car (black/black) and unfortunately missed (the seller was using me as a back-up buyer). OP: best of luck with the decision! |

Did you buy it with the thought you would keep it forever? Or bought it and were just going to see how it went? If it was a keeper and you are particular about used cars (kept clean, serviced, etc) then I would keep it, 2 yrs is realatively short and seems expat assignments always end early! If you weren't planning on keeping it a long time, I would sell it.

I bought the 1M as a keeper. If I were not going to Singapore I would keep it at least for 5 years, or more if it turns out to be a "collectible". |

I'd be inclined to keep it. It's really a very special car and it would likely be difficult (or expensive) to find another low mileage one to your tastes in two years.

If you don't need the cash then keep it. The economy sucks so it's not like the time value of money is going to be an issue. Either you have cash in the bank or the car in the garage. I'd keep the car personally but that has always been a problem of mine.

Sell it, save your hard earned money and come back and buy a 1M CSL.
By that time hopefully the CSL version will be out or you can buy it while you are away and store it. |

Thanks for the feedback gang. I was thinking if you do sell it, then it would be one helluva classy move to somehow get it to someone on the board.

of course you must mean the 993 .....
To the OP... seriously... if you planned on keeping it for years... you should do so... this is one special car! I really doubt you can pick up one that easily down the road... Imagine looking for an E36 M3 lightweight right around 1998-1999 or so.... impossible to find... and that for a car that actually languished at dealers ... unlike the 1M. Depends if this is an investment for you or specifically for your personal driving pleasure. This car is very special to me and represents (in my eyes) a return to M roots but with a modern twist. I couldn't imagine selling it unless I had to.
If it's purely for "investment" then I would say you could jettison it for ease of lifestyle.
