I have put on 5k miles since putting in the Motul 5w40. I had zero consumption for the first 4k miles which included two hot autocross days and a track day with 110 minutes of track time in 70-80 degree weather. I have been working on a custom tune, so there has been a lot of aggressive driving in between also, and with new FMIC about 2 weeks ago, the power level has gone up a few notches.
My oil level dropped 1/2 qt in the past 1000 miles, still read full on my way home from the track on September 10. It is either the more aggressive tune with more blow-by, or the oil is just done and is breaking down, which would suggest that it just isn't as good as the BMW/Castrol stuff. I will probably put in an OCC this winter to allow me to monitor that. I will go back to BMW 5w30 next time (I still have 3qts, so only have to buy 4) and compare.

Interesting. Maybe I'll buy 4 qts of the castrol branded stuff rather than mix and match. I need to order a blackstone kit so I can send a sample, hadn't thought of that.

And to update this thread, anybody using the M Power 0W40 in their cars?
Trying to find specs on this oil, but Shell/Pennzoil do not sell a consumer version of the 0W40 LL-01 as far as I can tell. I would really like to run a 0W oil, the thinner the better at startup. I really like the stats on the 5W40 Pennzoil Euro over the Motul 8100 5W40. If I can find a similar oil with even thinner viscosity at 40C and a lower pour point, that would be ideal. |

I don't drive the car in the winter, but even in the spring, can be below freezing. Guess I will give it a shot, maybe have an analysis done after 6000 km. Last edited by MightyMouseTech; 03-29-2017 at 12:21 PM.. |

Update: June 4, 2017
I was at my local BMW parts counter and I saw this chart that the dealer gets. Notice it now actually shows the Pennzoil logo, as I mentioned, Shell is sold in the US as Pennzoil Platinum Euro. Notice also that the 5W-30 oil that the dealer would put in our cars today only has 2 dots of wear protection and temperature stability whereas the new Twin Turbo 0W-40 has 4 dots for wear protection and 3for temperature stability. They now put 0w-30 in the M cars which have similar ratings per Pennzoil/Shell/BMW but if you drive your 1M into the dealer they will put 5W-30 because that is what it came with. It is probably fine but according to them, the new stuff is better. I recently switched to the M Twin Turbo 0W-40 but had to request it! The reason I put the screen capture showing it is certified for 1M from BMW Eruope sight is because US dealers don' know anything about the 0W-40 oil. You can see in the chart is the oil for maximum performance and certified for our cars but you have to specify it!! |

I've been using Motul in my VW's for quite some time with really good oil analysis results (I've put 190k miles on my polluting diesel and the engine is great). I plan to switch over to Motul for the 1M once I use up the remainder of all the BMW oil I purchased. Right now I'm changing oil at extremely short intervals, but still want to switch.
The problem with a car like the 1M is that the dealer has no idea because the car is very rarely seen by them. I have to tell them each time what to do (they did my trans, diff, etc). When I first bought my VW TDI I did my own oil changes, even though they were free and included in VW's service package, because I had read so many stories of the dealers putting the wrong oil in them when they came out.

I get the feeling that Castrol 0W-40 LL-01 will be the value leader. I'm talking about the $25.98/5L jug stuff at Walmart ($22.98 on sale, <$20 occasionally on Amazon.) I will probably run the stuff for my next oil change. In the end, I think that the stuff is all equivalent from an engine longevity standpoint. I've used BMW 5W-30 / M1 0W-40 / Castrol GC 0W-30 / Motul X-cess 5W-40 and none have looked substantively better than the other on UOAs. In the end I suspect any LL01 oil will be fine and it just makes most sense to use the one that is the cheapest to acquire.

So my main point is that if you get your oil changed at dealer you should consider asking for the M 0W-40. If you change yourself you can use any oil you want that is LL-01 and the right viscosity for your environment and driving conditions. |

Ok if you drive in a 135i into my dealer and they put BMW 5w-30 they charge $90 plus tax. If you drive in a 1M they charge you $159 for the exact same oil change but if you specify 0W-40 M Oil there is no extra charge. So I just paid the regular M car price but asked for the 0W-40. I could probably go to other dealer and get it for less but they take really good care of my car. They don't test drive and park it out front in the shade, not under the bird nests like the other cars so that's the price difference. If anyone out there gets it, let us know what you paid. I also just put this in my 2003 330i ZHP and it feels a little more "eager" in the morning after cold start. I was able to buy it for about $9.60 per liter which is actually less than the Pennzoil which sells by the quart for same price. A litter is larger than a quart. |

any uk bmw tech's confirm if they use 5-30 or 0-40 for uk 1M,my oil supplier recomends
castrol edge 0-30 5-30,5-40 & shell helix ultra5-30 all LL04 bmw approved,he also sells castrol edge 0-40 which is not recomended for 1M but in the spec is bmw LL01 approved, there are other brands as well which are 5-30-5-40,he does not sell 0-40 shell helix ultra, but on the shell web site there 0-40 does not say bmw approval,so what is bmw uk using, shell/castrol,5-30 or 0-40?? |

Pretty sure that's the same stuff they sell here as BMW M 0W-40. Good find for our European friends! |
