Engine oil for track use?
Hi,
Those of you who track your 1M regularly, what kind of oil do you use? The BMW-recommended 5W-30 LL-01/LL-04 or anything else? Also, do you use/need uprated oil coolers if you track a tuned 1M, considering it already has more cooling than a 135i? Thanks! -Balaclava

Running BMW/Castrol 5W30 in mine...no issues. No tune but ran all this weekend here in Dallas at the track. Temp outside was 80-90 degrees out and not heat issues at all. My temps were running no higher than 250.
Another 1M board member was running the Dinan tune with no issues as well. We compared notes and he wasn't running any higher temps than myself. I think you pretty safe with the OEM setup.

What Castrol product should I pck up to be the same as OEM (without the BMW label and price)? Is it a full synthetic, or GTX?

Thanks, the Castrol Edge Sport 0w-40 is exactly the kind of oil I was thinking about using as it meets BMW requirements and it's just a bit heavier when warm. So you guys don't think the 1M needs anything like the ER Competition Series Oil Cooler Kit? No problems with my oil temps off-track so far, but haven't tracked the car since the flash tune and just trying to avoid any problems later. Thank you!

I use German made Castrol RS Edge 0w40 LL-4 oil. Two needle width cooler oil temps. You have to be real carefull with Castrol bc they have a ton of different oils with simular names. I believe the RS Edge is now being called: Castrol FST Edge 0w40 LL-1. FST = Fluid Strength Technology I'm still buying Castrol RS Edge 0w40 LL-4 oil until I can not find it anymore! PS: for our EU members... this is where I buy my oil from. They sell the BMW oils for far cheaper than any dealer! 5 euros per liters vs 20 or 33 euros at the dealer! http://www.oeldepot24.de/motoroel.html?cat=42 Looks like I will be buying GC FST for my next oil change... http://www.oeldepot24.de/motoroel/mo...4-5-liter.html |

http://www.mapodo.de/castrol-edge-fo...-04-5-ltr.html Bit more expensive, but I believe we need LL-04 with the EU fuels.

No LongLife 01 or 04 certification on that one. Still good for the N54, whether used with US or EU fuels? Could you tell us what makes you think so? Thanks!

I have one 1M with original castrol 5w30. And a 1M with castrol 0w40.
0w40 temps are little lower on hard use. But the car eats a little oil. The 1M with 5W30 takes no oil at all. Why is that? Both cars bought new. |

I don't think it has anything to do with the different oil grades. Before the first service my car was with original oil (for sure Castrol 5w30) and now with Mobil 1 0w40 and it never lost any oil with either of them, there is a slight difference with the 0w40 Mobil 1 that I notice, the engine gets to optimum temperature a bit quicker compared to original oil, that's all. |
